The University of Utah men's golf program is coming off a strong fall season that included integral veteran play from junior Blake Tomlinson. Tomlinson shot 1-over par for the fall season with his best finish coming at the Oregon State Invitational where he tied for ninth overall after shooting even in the tournament.
Tomlinson competed in 23 events for the Utes his sophomore and freshman seasons, earning Pac-12 All-Freshman honors in 2017-18. He came to Utah after competing at Skyline High School in Salt Lake City, earning all-state three times in his high school career and earned a top-10 performance at the Junior World Championships.
Q: What is your earliest memory of golf and what was special about that moment?
A: "My earliest memory of golf is probably when I would hit plastic golf balls with a plastic club in my backyard against the brick wall on the back of our house."
Q: What was it like growing up in your hometown? Any specific memories that stand out?
A: "It was pretty sheltered up until high school when everyone started to drive and get more freedom. I didn't really experience real life until my senior year of high school."
Q: How has your family influenced you on and off the course?
A: "My family has been supporting me since the beginning, even when I quit golf for a couple years they knew I would come back and they gave me the tools that I needed to succeed. They don't come to many events because of their work, but they sometimes come and watch when they are able to."
Q: Who would you say you take after most in your family and why?
A: "I would say that I take after my father the most. I have a fiery passion and a strong will which are both traits that my father possess."
Q: What about the sport of golf made you fall in love with it?
A: "It would have to be the feeling of hitting the middle of the club-face and looking up to see the ball flying straight towards the hole."
Q: Was there ever a time that you thought college golf wouldn't be in your future? If so, what made you change your mind?
A: "Yes. When I was about 11 years old I basically quit golf to play other sports such as baseball and basketball. I was not totally sure I was going to come back and play competitively, but my parents urged me to try it out again and it all worked out in the end."
Q: What goals do you have for yourself after you graduate college?
A: "I plan to be a financial planner, working with my uncle in his financial advising firm. Or I will be a professional golfer on one of the mini-tours."
Q: What is something people might not know about you?
A: "I love to play any sport, not just golf. I enjoy playing basketball, baseball, foosball, ping pong."
Q: What about the University of Utah made you want to continue your career here?
A: "It was very close to home and I wanted to be a part of a program that I knew was progressing. Also Coach Clegg played a large role in my decision, he was the best coach that I encountered and I knew I would mesh well with what he was doing up at Utah."
Q: What has been your favorite part about playing golf at Utah so far?
A: "The overall atmosphere of being on the team. Having support from my teammates in anything I do is very important to me. We also hang out outside of practice and tournaments which is great for team chemistry and ultimately for having fun."
