SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah men's tennis team completed the weekend's action by recording two victories on Saturday with the first win coming from a 6-1 victory over Nevada, followed by a 7-0 sweep against Montana to remain undefeated in the George S. Eccles Tennis Center this season.
"The best thing for us is that we are starting to play better and better the more matches that we play," said head coach
Roeland Brateanu. "We are definitely starting to get more comfortable during match play and I'm happy with what I'm seeing from the team. It is good to get through a doubleheader like this when our bodies are getting a little tired and we are still finding ways to win."
Utah 6, Nevada 1
Starting off the doubleheader day against Nevada, the Utes asserted their dominance early in doubles.
Azat Hankuliyev and
Slava Shainyan recorded the first victory of the day on court No. 3, as they cruised past Benjamin Campi and Eadwyn Bacar 6-1. The duo of
Russell Benkaim and
Randy Cory then added a win from the No. 1 spot to quickly put Nevada behind 1-0 in the match. Benkaim and Cory defeated Julien Evrard and Isaac Nortey with a score of 6-4.
Nevada forfeited on court No. 6 in singles, giving Utah the early 2-0 lead.
Wally Thayne, Shainyan, Benkaim, and
Mathias Gavelin on courts two through five did not drop a set and each earned straight-set victories to give Utah the 6-1 win over the Wolfpack.
Utah 7, Montana 0
In doubles against Montana,
Franco Capalbo and Thayne rattled off a 6-0 victory at the No. 2 position when they topped Ed Pudney and Cameron Isbell. Cory and Benkaim then secured the doubles point for the second time of the day, as they beat out Max Korkh and Pontus Hallgren with a score of 6-2. Utah's strong doubles play once again granted Utah the 1-0 advantage heading into singles.
For Gavelin, Benkaim, and Shainyan in singles play, their respective matches against Montana were all once again done in straight-set victories for the Utes, building a 4-0 lead on Montana to secure the victory. Thayne and McCallie battled in three-set matches against opponents on the No. 5 and No. 6 courts, respectively, and would both come out on top. Looking to complete the sweep, Capalbo battled on Court 1 and pulled out a 7-6, 7-5 win against Max Korkh to give the Utes the 7-0 sweep to complete the undefeated weekend.
The Utah men's tennis team will be back in action next week to host two home matches at the Eccles Tennis Center in Salt Lake City. Both matches are on Friday, Feb. 7, with the Utes facing off against Utah State at 12 p.m. MT, followed by a match against Idaho State at 5 p.m. MT.
