ALRINGTON, Texas – The Utah baseball team bounced back and earned a 9-5 win over UT Arlington to even the series in Arlington, Texas.
Freshman
Trey Clarkson had his best game in a Utah uniform going 3-5 with four RBI and scored two runs while hitting his first career home run.
The Utes used a big second inning and then timely runs in the sixth and eighth to keep UT Arlington out of reach from making a comeback.
In the second inning, Utah loaded the bases with no outs and Clarkson singled through the right side to score two runs. After an Arlington error allowing another run to score,
Briley Knight scored Clarkson from third with a sacrifice bunt.
David Watson had another strong outing on the mound pitching 5.0 innings and only giving up three hits with six strikeouts while allowing three runs. With the win, his record improves to 1-1 on the season.
UT Arlington chipped away and cut the lead down to 4-3 after the fifth inning, but the Utes answered with two runs in the sixth and eighth to double up the Mavs at 8-4.
Dustyn Schramm relieved Watson starting in the sixth and finished the game out to preserve the win for Utah. He ended up pitching 4.0 innings and gave up one earned run on four hits.
Along with Clarkson,
Chase Fernlund had a multi-hit game going 2-4 with 2 RBI. Knight and
Shea Kramer also had RBI in the contest.
Utah totaled nine hits on the afternoon and the nine runs is the second most the Utes have scored this season.
Utah and UT Arlington will play the rubber match Sunday, March 1 beginning at 10 a.m. MT.
