SALT LAKE CITY – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced its 2020 Division I Mountain Region awards Monday morning with the Utah men's tennis program garnering the Mountain Region Rookie of the Year and the Community Service Award.
Earning the recognition of the Mountain Region Rookie of the Year was freshman
Franco Capalbo. Capalbo joined the Utes in January and earned the nod as the No. 1 singles player for Utah in his first season. Battling top opponents from each school, the Buenos Aires, Argentina native finished with an 8-5 overall record, which included a 7-3 record on court one.
Capalbo finished 6-3 against region opponents with all wins coming from the No. 1 position and four of the six in straight sets. Against Loyola Marymount, Capablo rallied from down 1-4 in the third set to win the next five consecutive games to win the set 6-4 and clinch the 4-3 team win. In doubles, Capalbo and his partner
Wally Thayne went 4-3 at the No. 2 doubles position and were 4-4 overall before the season was cut short.

The Utah men's tennis program earned the Mountain Region Team Community Service Award after completing 78 hours of service over the course of the year. The staff and team volunteered at the Volunteers of America, Utah, Homeless Youth Resource Center where they prepared and served meals to the local youth homeless community of Salt Lake City.
