SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah men's tennis program has announced the addition of Francisco Bastias to the 2020-21 roster. Bastias spent the first two seasons of his college career at Miami and will transfer to the Utes with two years of eligibility remaining.
"It feels great to be a Ute! I wanted to have a change in my life and I believe Utah is a perfect fit for me," said Bastias on his commitment to Utah. "I chose Utah because the city and weather are similar to my hometown in Argentina. My coach throughout juniors (
Sten van Beurden) is at Utah and he has told me about how amazing the coaching staff is and the family that they have created within the team."
The Mendoza, Argentina native finished the shortened season at Miami with a 10-1 singles dual record, which included a 5-0 record at the No. 2 singles position for the Hurricanes. Bastias also competed at the No. 2 doubles position and finished the season ranked No. 56 in the nation with a 10-2 overall record. In his career at Miami, he earned two ACC Player of the Week selections and two ACC Doubles Team of the Week honors.
As a freshman at Miami, Bastias earned third team All-ACC honors after finishing 18-12 in singles play and 21-8 in doubles. Highlighting his freshman campaign, Bastias clinched the match against No. 11 Notre Dame when tied 3-3, defeating Tristan McCormick, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (8-6) in the No. 2 spot for Miami.
Prior to competing on the college stage, Bastias compiled an impressive junior career, achieving an ITF Junior World ranking of No. 78. He ranked as high as the No. 2 junior in Argentina and reached an ATP high ranking of No. 1580.
In 2016, Bastias won three-straight ITF junior tournament titles, while advancing to a fourth-straight championship match at the next event before falling to the opponent he downed for his third event victory.
Bastias will join the Utah men's tennis team this fall and will be eligible immediately.
