SALT LAKE CITY β The University of Utah Menβs Golf program along with Athletics Director Mark Harlan and David Layton officially opened the doors to the David S. Layton Golf Academy today, introducing the new golf-training center in a small ribbon-cutting ceremony.
βIt has been exciting getting to watch the construction progress every day this fall since breaking ground in June, and now with the building complete, Utah Golf can officially call the David S. Layton Golf Academy home," Harlan said.
βI want to thank our generous donors for their contributions to this facility, particularly Dave Layton whose lead gift enabled this project to happen. I also want to thank head coach Garrett Clegg, our development staff, and our facility construction team for all of their work to ensure that our student-athletes have an elite training experience to continue the rise of this program.β
The $2.9 million facility sits across the street from the Spence and Cleone Eccles Football Center on Guardsman Way, expanding 7,000-square feet. The facility includes state-of-the-art technology that will give Utah student-athletes a first-class training experience right on campus.

βOpening this facility is incredible for the golf program,β Clegg said. βI would like to thank Dave Layton, Kurt Larsen and many other donors for making the funding of our building possible. I would also like to thank Mark Harlan and our administration for supporting us in our efforts to create a home on campus.β
The new facility includes a 4,000-square foot putting green that sits on the ground level, featuring 11 different holes with a variety of slopes and speeds. The Putt View System is installed over the green, giving the Utes the latest in player development technology.

On the same level, two driving bays contain accurate launch monitors that will help student-athletes develop their swings year-round with Gears Sports providing 3D motion capture technology.
The second level is geared toward team meeting spaces, which includes a player lounge with a TV, couches and gaming gear. There is also a fully functional kitchen for the team to use along with study tables and coaches offices.
βThe David S. Layton Golf Academy will be a place for our athletes to improve their golf skills, study for classes, and come together as a team,β Clegg said. βCreating an exceptional team atmosphere and family environment is something we strive for in our golf program and this will help us accomplish that every day of the year. As an alumni of the menβs golf program here at Utah, I am honored to be a part of everything that is happening.β
The Utes officially start the 2021 season Jan. 25-27 at the Arizona Intercollegiate, one of seven regular season tournaments on the schedule.
