Men’s Tennis Opens Play at Utah Invite; Franco Wraps Up Play at All-American

Utah opened play at its home tournament on Thursday.

SALT LAKE CITY/TULSA – It was a busy day of tennis for the Utah men's tennis team as they opened play at the Utah Invitational, and Franco Capablo finished play at the ITA All-American in Tusla, Oklahoma.

The Utah Invitational started with doubles, where the Utah squad faced players from Weber State. On court one, Bruno Caula and Francisco Bastias defeated the Wildcat duo 6-4. On court two, Jayson Blando and Mathias Gavelin fell short to Weber State duo Sarap/Marouani 6-3. Similarly, on court three, Michael Blando and Bruno Krenn were defeated by Coutinho/Savio for a final score of 6-4.

Moving to singles play, Utah faced Utah State. The Utes dominated this first round, taking victories in all but one court. On court one, Bastias battled it out with Utah State's Zarkovic and defeated him 6-2, 1-6, 6-2. Similarly, Caula downed his opponent 7-6(7), 6-3 on court two.

Gavelin took the upper hand on court three, winning 7-5, 6-3, followed by Krenn's victory on court four 6-1, 6-4. On court five, J. Blando fell short to Roko Savin, losing 6-3, 6-2. On court six, M. Blando defeated his opponent, Gabriel Chavez, after three challenging sets for score 5-7, 6-2, 6-2.

The Utes wrapped up the first day of the tournament with a second round of singles, facing Montana. On court one, Bastias earned his second victory of the day, defeating Montana's Oisin Shaffrey 6-1, 6-2. On court two, Caula started strong and won the first set but dropped the following two to Montana's Ed Pudney for score 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Gavelin and Krenn each obtained their second victory, with scores 6-4, 7-6(4) on court three and 6-3, 6-3 on court four. On court, five J. Blando was close to winning but fell short, and Montana came away with the victory, 7-6(6), 6-4.

Utah's Franco Capalbo continued singles play today in the consolation bracket for Main Draw singles.
Capalbo faced Andres Andrade from Florida, putting up a fight and being close to a tiebreaker set. Unfortunately, Capalbo dropped the match for a final score of 6-2, 7-5.

The Utah Invitational will continue tomorrow. Doubles will begin at 9 a.m. MT, followed by another round of doubles and two rounds of singles.
