Clark Phillips III Earns Chuck Bednarik Award Player of the Week

SOUTHAMPTON, Pa. – The national recognition continues for sophomore cornerback Clark Phillips III with the Lakewood, Calif., native earning Chuck Bednarik Award Player of the Week for his performance in Utah's' 42-16 victory over Oregon State.
The Chuck Bednarik Award is given out annually to the best defensive player in college football. Phillips, who also earned Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week and Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week, is currently on the Chuck Bednarik Award watch list.
Phillips racked up a career-high three interceptions against the Beavers, adding three tackles. His three picks are the most in a game by an FBS player this season, also tying for second-most all-time at Utah in a single-game.
He had two interceptions in the first quarter, picking off the Beavers on their first drive of the game and again on a perfectly read play with a 38-yard return to the end zone. His final interception of the game came in the fourth quarter on a second-and-five, outjumping a Beaver wide receiver in the corner of the end zone.
His three interceptions was the most in a game by a Ute since 2009 (Robert Johnson vs. Colorado State), bringing his season total to four, which is tied for first nationally. He has seven career interceptions with three pick-sixes, including two that have some this season.
His three career interceptions returned for touchdowns is the second-most by an active player in the FBS this season, also leading all active players in the Pac-12.
