SALT LAKE CITY- After nearly a four month long break the University of Utah golf team returns to action for the Spring portion of its 2021-2022 season.
The Utes will compete in five regular season tournaments as they look to get the entire team to nationals after senior
Tristan Mandur represented Utah as an individual just a year ago earning the highest finish in program history at the NCAA Championships (T-17). The Utes are coming off a fall season where they had four top five team finishes, the most in the early portion of the season since 2017 and will look to continue to build off that momentum.
"My expectations are pretty high for this team," said head coach Garett Clegg. "In our fall season we performed okay but it wasn't great and I know we have a lot more in us that I hope we can showcase in the spring."
Up on the Tee
The Utes will continue to be led by seniors
Blake Tomlinson and Mandur, who combined for three top 10 finishes in the teams five fall tournaments. Both have been with the team for five years and will look to close out their impressive collegiate careers on a high note this spring.
Utah will also have the support of their strong sophomore duo in
Jesper von Reedtz and
Javier Barcos. Barcos was the only one on the team to register four top 25 finishes and two top three finishes while Reedtz posted two top 35 performances of his own. In just two years with the Utes, Barcos currently owns the record for the lowest 54-hole score on record at Utah (-11, 199), finishing second at the Notre Dame Collegiate and sits atop the record book for the lowest 36-hole score (-13, 129) which he posted at the Visit Stockton Invite.
Redshirt Freshmen
Martín León will also look to build off a strong fall campaign in which he posted three top 25 finishes. Over the lengthy break, Martin kept his game sharp playing in two different tournaments including the Latin America Amateur Championship where he was tied for third after the opening round.
True Freshmen
Braxton Watts will also be looking to contribute after competing in one fall tournament for Utah.
"This is a really good group and they're extremely skilled players," said coach Clegg. "Everything we're doing right now is better than it's ever been and that gets me excited because as far as talent goes top to bottom, we're a lot better than we've ever been."
Spring Season Outlook
Utah will tee off their spring season where everyone would love to be in the middle of February, Hawaii. Here the team will compete in the John A. Burns Intercollegiate from February 17-19, at the Ocean Course Hokuala on the island of Kauai. This will be the first of three tournaments in three consecutive weeks for Utah.
Following, the Utes make the short trek down to Las Vegas to compete in the Lake Las Vegas Invitational (Feb. 28-Mar. 2) and three days later will fly to Oregon to compete in the four-day Bandon Dunes Invitational (Mar. 5-8).
"Going to the John A. Burns is the one our guys love the most and then just to be able to drive to our next tournament in Vegas will be nice," said coach Clegg. "The Lake Las Vegas invitational has a strong field and I think it will be a good test for the boys. We'll close out that stretch by competing at Bandon which we always enjoy."
The team will return to Oregon a week and a half later to compete in the Duck invitational, their first of two consecutive Pac-12 hosted tournaments. The second and final regular season event will be the ASU Thunderbird Invitational on April 15-16. Nine days later the team will begin postseason play when they compete in the Pac 12 Championships amongst a strong field.
"We decided to play in the Duck Invitational this year because the Pac-12 championships are in Seattle which is wet and sloppy in April," said coach Clegg. "So we scheduled the Duck Invite to get us prepared for the Pac-12 championships, which I feel we have a very realistic ability to be in the top five of and have a great showing".
The team will then hope to qualify for the NCCA Regionals and if they perform strongly, will be awarded the opportunity to compete in the NCCA championships May 27-June 1st.
"I felt like we only played up to our full potential in one of our five fall tournaments, so we still have a way to go," said coach Clegg. "But as long as we can compete and have three or four guys towards the top of each tournament then we will finish the year where we want to be."
