SAN DIEGO – Utah baseball is undefeated through five games (4-0-1) following a 4-0 shutout victory at San Diego State on Saturday night at Tony Gwynn Stadium. It marks the best start for the Utes through five games since at least the 1981 season.
Â
Saturday's game also marked the first time Utah shut out an opponent since an 8-0 triumph over UC Davis on May 24, 2019.
Â
Right-hander
Randon Hostert had a nice bounce-back outing in his second start of the season, tossing 6.2 innings of three-hit, shutout ball with eight strikeouts—one short of tying a career-high. He was relieved with two outs in the seventh by
Ben Kibbe, who went the remaining 2.1 innings and allowed only two walks—fanning three along the way.
Â
It was an all-around team effort both at the plate and defensively as six different Utes contributed a hit, including a three-hit night from
Alex Baeza, his first such performance as a Ute.
Â
Utah was first to the scoreboard, breaking a 0-0 tie in its half of the fourth inning. A one-out double by
Chase Anderson opened the sequence, then
Jayden Kiernan popped a single that allowed Anderson to score on an error. A wild pitch moved Kiernan to third, then he scored on a base hit from Baeza.
Â
In the following frame, Utah doubled its lead to 4-0 when
Kai Roberts went opposite field on a 1-1 pitch, sending the ball over the left-center field fence for a two-run homer. It was Roberts' second dinger of the season and brought in
Dakota Duffalo, who had singled with one out.
Â
From that point on it was a pretty lockdown effort on the mound and in the field by the Utes. San Diego State never advanced a runner past second base, and the lone jam for Utah came in the bottom of the seventh, when two Aztecs came aboard on two-out walks.
Â
Utah did not allow a hit after the third inning, and only once all night—a walk in the fifth inning—did the Aztecs' leadoff hitter reach base.
Â
The Utes close out the weekend with a rematch against SDSU on Sunday, Feb. 27 in a game beginning at 3Â p.m. MT from Tony Gwynn Stadium.
