SAN DIEGO –
Carter Booth hit his first home run as a Ute, but Utah fell to San Diego State, 4-3, in a game shortened to seven innings on Sunday afternoon at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The game was called once it reached a predetermined time of day, established due to Utah's return travel itinerary and in a similar manner to last Sunday's series finale at Loyola Marymount.
Utah (4-1-1) had five hits in the ballgame, highlighted by a double off the bat of
TJ Clarkson as well as Booth's dinger, which came in the fifth inning.
Starting pitcher
Cam Day made the second start of his true freshman season, going 3.2 innings while allowing two runs on six hits and two walks, striking out five in his outing.
Bryson Van Sickle came on from the bullpen for the next 2.1 innings and fanned a pair while allowing a run, while Clarkson later appeared on the mound and was the tough-luck losing pitcher (0-1).
After a scoreless 2 ½ innings, San Diego State took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Shaun Montoya led off the frame with an infield single, reached third on a walk and fielder's choice, then scored on a grounder to the right side.
But Utah quickly leveled the score at one in the Utes' half of the fourth.
Kai Roberts worked a walk to begin the inning and quickly advanced to third when
Chase Anderson sent a liner over the first baseman's head. Roberts made the final 90 feet home thanks to a little small ball, via a bunt down the first base line by
Matt Richardson.
The Aztecs answered with another run in the bottom of the frame, before Booth broke through for the two-run shot in the fifth inning.
Dakota Duffalo was hit by a pitch with two outs, before Booth battled through an eight-pitch at bat and clubbed one over the left-center field wall.
Utah had chances at insurance in both the sixth and seventh innings, but were unable to push any runs across. The Utes loaded the bases in the sixth only for a double play to end the frame; then, in the seventh, runners were left in scoring position.
A walk and bunt single opened the bottom of the seventh for SDSU, ahead of a sac bunt to move the Aztecs' runners to second and third. A four-pitch walk loaded the bases, then Brian Leonhardt sent a fly ball that dropped into center field to score two and give the home side the walk-off victory.
Utah continues its non-conference schedule on Tuesday, March 1 with a road tilt at UNLV. First pitch is scheduled for 3:05 p.m. MT at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
