SALT LAKE CITY – Despite a career-high 11 strikeouts for right-hander
Matthew Sox—one short of tying Utah's single-game record, the Utah baseball team was held to five hits as No. 8 Stanford claimed the series opener by a 5-0 score on Friday night at Smith's Ballpark. The Utes will look to even the series with the Cardinal on Saturday, with the middle game set for a 2 p.m. MT start.
Sox's performance in the strikeout column was the most by a Ute this season, and the most by a Utah player since 2018. He worked six-plus innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits and just one walk. Sox (4-4) struck out the side in order in both the fourth and sixth innings, and at one point fanned five in a row between the third and fifth frames.
Utah (25-22-1, 10-15 Pac-12) was led at the plate by a 2-for-3 effort from second baseman
Landon Frei, who doubled and walked in the ballgame. Right fielder
Kai Roberts, third baseman
Chase Anderson and first baseman
Alex Baeza also contributed hits.
Stanford went ahead with solo homers in the second and third innings off the bats of Kody Huff and Brock Jones, respectively. A two-out error in the fifth inning allowed the Cardinal to plate another run, then the visitors wrapped up the scoring with Jones' second homer of the night (seventh inning), followed by a sacrifice fly (eighth inning).
Looking to claw back, the Utes put runners in scoring position with one out in the seventh inning, but Cardinal starter Alex Williams (7-1) countered with a pair of strikeouts to end the threat.
In the bottom of the ninth, Utah refused to go down quietly, loading the bases with a pair of singles and a walk. But a one-out grounder came back to the mound, starting a 1-2-3 double play to conclude the ballgame.
