ATLANTA, Ga. – Utah Football's all-time wins leader and head coach Kyle Whittingham has been named to the 2022 Dodd Trophy preseason watch list, which was announced today by the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and the Peach Bowl.
The list includes 20 of the nation's top college football coaches representing all Power Five conferences, as well as the AAC and independent with Whittingham representing the Pac-12. Managed by the Peach Bowl, the Dodd Trophy celebrates the head coach of a team who enjoys success on the gridiron, while also stressing the importance of scholarship, leadership and integrity.
Whittingham, who holds an overall record of 144-70 as he enters his 18th year at the helm, is the longest-tenured coach in the Pac-12 and the second-longest tenured head coach at the same school in the FBS. The Utes have finished with a winning record in 15 of his 17 years, including in eight straight while picking up at least a share of the Pac-12 South Title in three of the last four seasons.
Whittingham won the Dodd Trophy in 2019, also earning AFCA Coach of the Year and the Bear Bryant Award in 2008. He has been named the Pac-12 Coach of the Year twice in the last four seasons, including after Utah's historic season in 2021.
After starting the year 1-2 and having to face two unimaginable tragedies, Utah rallied together to win nine of its final 11 games, winning the program's first-ever Pac-12 Championship game to earn a trip to the Rose Bowl. Utah finished the year ranked No. 11 in the final CFP Poll, tying for its highest season finish in program history after going 8-1 in Pac-12 play.
Whittingham has coached 30 All-Americans, including 17 that have made major All-America first-teams. He has seen 99 first-team all-conference selections under his direction with 48 coming in Utah's 11 seasons of Pac-12 membership.
The Utes have also had 21 selections to the NFL Draft from 2017-21, which ranks second among all Pac-12 schools. In 2022, Devin Lloyd was drafted in the first round (27th overall), becoming the highest drafted linebacker in program history after the Utes had the most players drafted in the Pac-12 in 2020 (7).
