Clark Phillips III Placed on Bednarik Award Preseason Watch List

PHILADELPHIA – University of Utah cornerback Clark Phillips III has been named to the Preseason Watch List for the 2022 Chuck Bednarik Award, announced on Monday morning by the Maxwell Football Club. Now in its 28th year, the Bednarik Award is presented annually to the most outstanding defensive player in college football.
The 90-player watch list will be narrowed down to semifinalists on November 1, with the three finalists being named on November 22. The winner of the 28th Bednarik Award will be announced as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show held on December 8. The formal presentations of the award will be made at the 86th Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala live from Atlantic City, New Jersey on March 10, 2023.
Phillips has started in every game since stepping foot on campus at Utah (19), earning All-Pac-12 honors in 2021 after a standout season. He wrapped up the year as one of three active Pac-12 players with multiple pick-sixes in their career.
He started all 14 games in 2021, recording 63 tackles with 13 pass breakups, two interceptions and two forced fumbles. His 15 passes defended led the Pac-12 with his 11 passes defended in conference play leading all freshmen.
