PALO ALTO, Calif. – The eighth-ranked Utah Utes battled through a sluggish offensive performance against No. 4 ranked Stanford on Friday night but ultimately fell 74-62.
Stanford improved to 18-2 and 6-1 in Pac-12 play, while Utah is now 15-2 and 5-2 in the Pac-12.
The Utes started the game with a strong 10-2 lead but let the Cardinal come back and tie things up at 12-12. At the end of the first quarter Utah trailed 24-22. Stanford continued to pressure in the second quarter, holding Utah scoreless for five minutes. Alissa Pili found a breaking Jenna Johnson for an easy layup to end the scoring drought and spark an 8-0 Utes run, the largest Utah run of the game. The Utes maintained a groove for the remainder of the half and the beginning of the third quarter, cutting a 12-point scoring deficit to just three with 3:25 left in the third quarter.
Utah trailed by five going into the fourth quarter but couldn't maintain momentum as Stanford pushed out for a 15-point lead, the largest deficit for the Utes so far this season. The Utes had struggled from the three the entire game, going 4-25. Gianna Kneepkens tried her luck beyond the arc with just two seconds remaining, draining it to make the final score rest at 74-62.
Pili led Utah with 25 points, going 8-18 from the field and 9-11 from the free throw line. Kneepkens was the only other Ute in double figures with 19, going 6-16 from the field. Kneepkens also went 3-6 from beyond the arc, recording three of Utah's five triples.
Jenna Johnson led the Utes pulling down 12 boards and led the team with five assists.
Stanford out rebounded Utah 36-34 and outscored Utah 42-26 in the paint. Turnovers were evenly matched, with both teams recording 12.
Utah ended the game shooting 33 percent from the field, 19 percent from beyond the arc and 89.5 percent from the line, going 17-19. Stanford finished the game shooting 49 percent from the field, 28 from the three and 77 from the line.
TALKING ABOUT THE GAME – HEAD COACH LYNNE ROBERTS: "It was a hard-fought game. I think our players did a good job competing. If you look at their box score, (Cameron) Brink and (Haley) Jones had 50 (points) and 26 (rebounds). Those two are just tough. But for us, in terms of our offense and what makes us go, if we're going to shoot 19-percent from three, we're not going to come in here and win. But that was my fault. I didn't use the bench today very well. I didn't sub well, so we ran out of gas. I thought we came out of halftime really good and we just got a little tired. That's my fault. But credit to Stanford. They're so good and they're so deep, and it feels like they just keep bringing in somebody 6-5 all the time. Credit to Stanford. I thought we battled, but we just didn't shoot well enough."
STANDOUT STATS Despite Utah's cold streak from the field the Utes produced points from the line going 17-19 for an 89.5 percentage. This is the most free throws and highest percentage Utah has made in Pac-12 action this season.
UP NEXT Utah remains on the road to take on Cal on Jan. 22 at 5 p.m. (Pac-12 Networks). The Utes will return home Jan. 27 to take on USC and Jan. 29 to host UCLA. Tyson Ewing and Milee Enger will have the Utah radio call on ESPN700, and live stats can be found at UtahUtes.com.
