Cole Bishop Named Semifinalist For Jim Thorpe Award

OKLAHOMA CITY – Utah Football safety Cole Bishop has been named a semifinalist for the 2023 Paycom Jim Thorpe Award, given annually to the nation's best defensive back.
Bishop is one of 15 semifinalists and is one of two players representing the Pac-12 on the list with finalists for the award being announced on Tuesday, Nov. 28.
Through eight games in 2023, Bishop is tied for the team lead in total tackles with 42, adding 4.5 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks along with two interceptions, five passes defended, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries. He is one of five players in the Pac-12 that have multiple fumble recoveries this season with his two tied for seventh in the FBS.
He is averaging 5.2 tackles per game this season, including leading the team in total stops twice (11 vs. Florida, 6 vs. Cal) while also notching a pass breakup in four straight games (at Baylor, Weber State, UCLA, at Oregon State). His interceptions came against Baylor and at Oregon State with his pick in Waco setting up Utah's game winning touchdown drive.
The Peachtree City, Ga., native has played in 32 career games at Utah with 26 starts. He led the team in tackles in 2022 (83) and led all freshmen on the team in tackles in 2021 with 54.
