LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – University of Utah Football defensive coordinator Morgan Scalley has been named one of 57 nominees for the 2023 Broyles Award, given each year to college football's top assistant coach.
The selection committee will narrow the list to 15 semi-finalists and then five finalists, eventually announcing the winner later this year. Scalley was a finalist for the Broyles award in 2019 when Utah ranked second in the FBS in total defense.
Through 10 games this season, The Utes rank fifth in the FBS in rushing defense (85.6), also sitting at No. 15 in total defense (299.8) and No. 16 in scoring defense (17.8). Utah also leads the country in third down defense (.256) while also ranking sixth in first downs defense (147).
Utah is averaging 3.0 sacks per game, which ranks 14th in the FBS with its team passing efficiency defense also landing at No. 16 nationally and first in the Pac-12 (115.01). Utah has finished in the top-half of the Pac-12 in total defense six times in the past eight seasons.
Scalley is in his 16th season on the Utes' coaching staff and eighth as defensive coordinator. He has also been coaching the safeties since joining the staff in 2008.
This season, Utah has held five of its opponents to under 100 yards rushing which also includes keeping two of those teams to under 200 yards of total offense (127 vs. Weber State, 83 vs. Arizona State). Under Scalley, Utah ranks fourth among Power Five programs in rushing yards allowed per game since 2016 (109.1), also leading the Pac-12 in most league games with an opponent under 100 yards rushing since 2016 (33).
Scalley has coached 29 players to the NFL with the most recent being unanimous All-American and 2023 first-round NFL Draft pick Clark Phillips III as well as 2022 first rounder Devin Lloyd. He has also coached 10 All-Americans and 17 first-team all-conference picks.
