Utah picked to finish eighth in Pac-12 Preseason Poll
SAN FRANCISCO – The Pac-12 Conference released its annual preseason poll and preseason all-conference team on Wednesday and Ellessa Bonstrom and Julia Jimenez were both recognized with spots on the preseason squad, while the University of Utah softball team was picked to finish eighth.
For both Jimenez and Bonstrom, this preseason honor comes after a 2022 campaign in which they earned spots on the All-Pac-12 First-Team and were also selected to the NFCA All-Pacific Region First-Team. They finished as the top two players on the Utah roster in multiple statistics, including home runs, RBIs and total bases.
Bonstrom put together a career year in 2022, setting career-highs in a slew of categories, among them runs scored, hits and steals. Her .376 batting average was tops on the roster, as were her 11 homers and she paced the club in on-base percentage and slugging percentage as well. On the basepaths, she nearly doubled her stolen base total from 2021, swiping 11 bags and she made only two errors all year for a .986 fielding percentage.
Jimenez started all 54 games for Utah in 2022 and she didn't waste any time making an impact during her first year in Salt Lake City. She led the team with 52 RBIs while ranking second in home runs, hits, walks and slugging percentage and posted career-highs in nearly every offensive statistic, including batting average, runs, doubles and homers. She also helped anchor the Utah infield by showing off an excellent glove at third base and finishing the season with a .958 fielding percentage.
In the conference's preseason poll, UCLA was chosen as the Pac-12's preseason favorite for the third straight year, piling up 64 points and eight of the league's nine first place votes. This comes after a season in which the Bruins reached the Women's College World Series for the eighth straight year.
Stanford took second place in the rankings with 54 points, one more than third place Washington, while Oregon was placed fourth. Fifth place was occupied by Arizona while Oregon State piled up 25 points to land in sixth. California was rated seventh, followed by the Utes in eighth and Arizona State in ninth.
The Utes are less than two weeks away from the start of their 2023 season, which will begin at UC San Diego's La Jolla Invitational on Feb. 10, when Utah is scheduled to take on Stonehill at 12 p.m. and Northern Colorado at 2:30 p.m. The Utes will spend the tournament's second day tangling with Northern Colorado at 12 p.m. before a 5:30 p.m. matchup with UCSD. They will conclude their time in the Golden State with a Sunday clash with the Tritons at 10 a.m.
