SAN FRANCISCO – Utah starting pitcher
Randon Hostert struck out seven in his five-inning start, but San Francisco's Adam Shew fanned eight in a pitcher's duel as the Utes fell, 3-1, on Saturday at Benedetti Diamond.
Hostert (0-1) allowed two runs on five hits and did not allow a walk on the day. His strikeout total was two from tying his single-game career-high (9).
Left-hander
Brady Maylett struck out two of the four batters he faced in relief, while freshmen
Garrison Sumner and
Merit Jones each made their collegiate debut later in the ballgame. Jones had four strikeouts in 1.2 innings of work.
Shortstop
Bruer Webster contributed a pair of hits in the loss, while first baseman
TJ Clarkson and center fielder
Dakota Duffalo had back-to-back doubles in the sixth inning.
USF plated a pair of runs early in the ballgame, taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning and adding another run in the third frame—both on RBI singles.
The game moved right along until the sixth inning, when Utah got back within one. Clarkson clubbed a two-out double to right field, then Duffalo hit a double of his own that rolled to the Benedetti Diamond scoreboard in left field, scoring Clarkson.
But the Dons would go back up by two during their half of the seventh, using a bloop single behind third base to bring home a runner from second.
Utah had chances to get closer throughout the ballgame, but left runners in scoring position in the third, sixth and seventh innings.
Game three of the teams' four-game set is scheduled for Sunday at 2 p.m. MT. The Utes are expected to send right-handed
Jaden Harris to the mound.
