Bonstrom collects second player of the week honor, Dayton named freshman of the week
SAN FRANCISCO – Ellessa Bonstrom and Abby Dayton spent March 17-19 helping the No. 19 University of Utah softball team take two of three on the road from the then-No. 17 Arizona Wildcats and, for their efforts, both student-athletes were recognized by the Pac-12. Bonstrom received her second Pac-12 Player of the Week award in two weeks, while Dayton became the first Ute in six years to be named Pac-12 Freshman of the Week.
Bonstrom is only the second Utah softball player to ever collect two Pac-12 Player of the Week awards in one season, matching a feat accomplished by Hannah Flippen in 2015. Dayton is Utah's first freshman of the week since Kelly Martinez won the award in 2017 and this represents the first time two Utes have won simultaneous league awards since 2016.
Bonstrom slugged home runs in both of Utah's victories last week and drove in five total runs against the Wildcats. In Friday's series opener, she singled in two runs in the fourth and added a solo homer in the sixth in an 8-3 Utah victory. On Sunday, Bonstrom put up two more knocks, scored three runs and blasted a go-ahead, two-run round-tripper in the seventh that helped complete Utah's comeback from six runs down to earn a 13-11 win. Bonstrom batted .444 for the series with a .615 on-base percentage and a 1.222 slugging percentage and added a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage at first base.
Dayton also swung a red-hot bat in Tucson, hitting .600. She picked up one hit on Friday, then went 3-for-4, scored twice and drove in two more runs in Saturday's contest. In the rubber game of the series on Sunday, Dayton knocked in four runs with a pair of doubles and also scored a run to help the Utes storm back from six runs, the program's largest comeback since 2015. Dayton's six RBIs and six hits for the week matched a team-high and she also slugged .800 and scored three total runs.
