The First Pitch: Things to Know
Winners in three straight games, the Utah baseball team resumes Pac-12 Conference play this weekend with a three-game series out at No. 9 Stanford. With the Cardinal on quarter exams this week, the series will run from Saturday through Monday at Sunken Diamond, rather than the traditional Friday through Sunday docket.
- Utah knocked off Northern Colorado by a 12-5 score in eight innings during the first game on Tuesday, followed up with a 12-8 triumph in the nightcap. The Utes and Bears were originally scheduled to play Tuesday and Wednesday, but the Wednesday game was moved up a day due to inclement weather in the forecast.
- Cameron Gurney and Jayden Kiernan each had four RBI in the doubleheader and Micah Ashman capped off the night with his fifth save of the season. Utah had a season-high 16 hits in the first game, aided by six multi-hit performances throughout the lineup. Kiernan and Gurney had three hits apiece and Matt Flaharty logged his first three RBI as a Ute.
- Left-hander Ernesto Lugo-Canchola picked up the Game 1 win for the Utes, thanks to 2.1 scoreless innings of relief, allowing just one hit and a walk. TJ Clarkson, Bransen Kuehl, Blake Whiting and Jaxon Grossman also saw time on the bump.
- The first game was called after eight innings due to reaching a pre-determined time of day that no new inning could begin. The time was put in place to allow enough time for field prep as well as accommodate a hard start time with game two airing on TV and radio.
- Utah put up eight runs in the first inning of Game 2, working seven walks and putting three Utes on base by HBP. Kiernan drove in three runs in the nightcap, complementing Jaden Harris' three-inning staff day start. Randon Hostert, Zac McCleve and Ashman took it from there to complete the doubleheader sweep.
- Stanford swept last year's series in Salt Lake City, though there were some standout individual performances from the Utes. Friday night starter Matthew Sox racked up 11 strikeouts in the series opener, one short of tying Utah's single-game record. On Sunday, Utah led after seven innings at Smith's Ballpark and had the tying run in scoring position in the ninth, but in the end it was Stanford that nipped Utah, 7-6. Starter Cam Day left in line for the win when he exited in the sixth inning.
- The Utes are looking for their first win over Stanford since 2021, coming away with the middle game that year by an 8-4 score. Utah's last series win over the Cardinal came in 2016, and last accomplished the feat on the road during the 2013 season.
Checking the Numbers
- Utah enters the Stanford series with 28 stolen bases on the season; it leads the Pac-12 and is three from matching the club's total from 2022.
- Cameron Gurney made it all the way to last Friday, March 17, before being retired by strikeout for the first time. It ended a streak of his first 49 collegiate at bats without a 'K', and puts Gurney as the nation's top freshman when it comes to toughest players to strike out (he currently averages one strikeout every 20.3 at bats).
- Six-foot-seven lefty Micah Ashman earned his fifth save in Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader. It is tied for the Pac-12 lead and No. 8 nationally. All five have come in his last five appearances.
- TJ Clarkson's six home runs enter the week as the sixth-most by a Pac-12 player. It is already more than halfway to Clarkson's long ball total from last season (11) and brings the redshirt junior to 20 homers in his career.
- Clarkson's next hit will be the 100th of his collegiate career. He continues to ride a 17-game reached-base streak, building up after Clarkson ran up a streak of 38 straight games last season.
- While last weekend's series went Arizona State's way, Utah averaged nine runs per game over the three contests. It was the highest average for the team in a weekend series this season.
