THIS WEEK
In two of their first three tournaments in the spring, the University of Utah men's golf team has set a season-best, first by posting their lowest score of the year at the John Burns Intercollegiate, then with their highest finish at the Bandon Dunes Championship. The next chance for the Utes to continue building on their solid spring comes at The Goodwin, a 54-hole tournament hosted by the Stanford Cardinal at TPC Harding Park and it will run from Thursday through Saturday in San Francisco.
This will represent the second of three trips to California for Utah in 2022-23, with the last instance being the Pac-12 Championships at the end of April, but it will be the team's first time competing in The Goodwin since the spring of 2018. The Utes' best score in that event belonged to
Blake Tomlinson, who was 1-over through the final 54 holes and, in a field of over 130 players, including future PGA Tour Champion Collin Morikawa, Tomlinson tied for 59th.
The 2022 version of The Goodwin was won by Washington with a score of 22-under, while Nevada's Peyton Callens posted a mark of 13-under to win the individual title. This year's competition will mark the 53rd edition of this tournament.
THE FIELD
A total of 28 teams will be competing for the tournament championship, including a pair of top 10 squads in the seventh-ranked Cardinal and No. 10 Georgia Tech. Among the teams making up the rest of the field are No. 13 Oklahoma and eight more Pac-12 programs, including the Utes.
UTAH'S LINE-UP
Five players will be in Utah's lineup in San Francisco and that list will consist of
Javier Barcos,
Braxton Watts,
Brandon Robison,
Go Nakatsukasa and
Martín León.
COACHES THOUGHTS: Head Coach Garrett Clegg
"This is going to be a tough week," said Clegg. "It's one of the best tournaments we will play in this year. There is a huge field and the golf course is extremely difficult. We will have the same line-up for three straight weeks and I'm excited to see how we can handle this week."
LAST TIME OUT
Clegg's crew nearly claimed its first team championship of the season at the Bandon Dunes Championship in Oregon before finishing tied for second, the highest they've placed at a tournament so far in 2022-23. The Utes were 12-over after 18 holes, then sliced a dozen shots off their first-round score to reach even-par on the final day and move one spot up the leaderboard.
For the second time in the spring,
Braxton Watts was responsible for his team's best score and his 2-over 146 left him just one stroke away from squeezing into the top 10. After shooting 2-over on day one, Watts collected four birdies over his final 18 holes to card an even-par 72 and tie for 12th. Through three spring events, nobody on the Utah roster has a better stroke average than Watts, who owns a mark of 71.6.
Utah's sharpest golfers during the squad's final day in Oregon were León and Nakatsukasa, who both finished the day in the red with a pair of 71s. León was 4-under through his first 14 holes during the last round, including one stretch of three straight birdies, while Nakatsukasa kept his score under par thanks to five birdies and an eagle, allowing him to climb up 27 spots into a tie for 49th. Through nine rounds of golf in the spring, Nakatsukasa has finished at even-par or better four times.
TOURNAMENT DETAILS
The first Ute will tee off on hole no. 1 at 8 a.m. PT on Thursday morning and all five Utes will be on the course by 8:48 a.m. Utah's second round will begin at 1 p.m. PT on Friday and the golfers will be re-paired for play on Saturday, which will start at 7 a.m.
