SAN ANTONIO –
Kaden Carpenter and
TJ Clarkson each homered for Utah, but that was all the scoring for the Utes on Sunday as the squad dropped the rubber game, 14-3, to UTSA at Roadrunner Field.
Â
Utah (5-6) will now head West as part of the team's Spring Break trip. The Utes will match up with Cal State Fullerton on Tuesday, March 7, in a 7 p.m. MT first pitch at Goodwin Field. That'll be the final game before opening Pac-12 Conference play at Washington from March 10-12.
Â
Clarkson had a season-high three hits and
Cameron Gurney, making his first start at first base, contributed a pair of base hits as the Utes totaled 11 for the day. For Gurney, the performance extended his hitting streak to a team-leading eight games.
Â
UTSA broke the ice with three runs in the second inning. It came on four straight hits for the Roadrunners, including a two-run home run, before the home club added one more tally via an error.
Â
The pace picked up over the next few innings before the clubs traded two-spots in the fifth. In the top half,
Kai Roberts worked a leadoff walk before Clarkson clubbed a two-run homer later in the frame. It was a no-doubter for Clarkson, who took the first pitch long beyond the right field wall—earning his fifth home run of the year and second of the UTSA series.
Â
But the Roadrunners answered with a pair of runs in the home half of the fifth and breaking the game open in the sixth, batting around for six runs.
Â
Utah got one run back on Carpenter's solo shot in the top of the eighth, his first collegiate home run.
Merit Jones (0-1) made his second career start, going 4.1 innings and striking out four.
