SALT LAKE CITY – Utah head men's basketball coach
Craig Smith announced the signing of Jake Wahlin from Timpview High School late Monday morning.
Â
"We are excited to welcome Jake Wahlin to our Runnin' Utes family," said Smith. "Jake is a tremendous competitor who comes from a great family and is just scratching the surface of the player he can become. Standing at 6-10, Jake brings skill and versatility at the wing position that you just don't see at his size. I have no doubt that Jake will be a fan favorite amongst the Runnin' Ute faithful here at the U for the next four years."
Â
Wahlin joins the Runnin' Utes after spending the last two years in Lithuania serving his mission for The Church of Jesus Christ for Latter Day Saints.
Â
The Keller, Texas, native spent his prep career playing at Timpview High School in Provo, Utah, and guided the Thunderbirds to a runner-up finish in the state championship his junior year – which was played inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center. He also helped THS capture two regional titles, once as a freshman and then as a senior where they went 12-0 in regional play. During his prep career, Wahlin led the T-Birds to a 75-29 overall record.
Â
He was a McDonald's All-American Game nominee his senior year after guiding THS to a 22-4 overall record. The 6-10 forward was also consensus three-star recruit out of high school by 247Sports, Rivals and ESPN. In addition, he was rated the No. 2 recruit out of Utah his senior year by 247Sports and ESPN on top of earning a West Coast Elite Top-100 camp invite.
Â
Wahlin comes from a family of athletes with plenty of ties to the state of Utah. His father played football at BYU while his sister Malery was a member of the volleyball team at BYU that played in the 2014 National Championship game vs. Penn State. His grandfather, Marvin, was a back for Arizona State in the early 1950s and was drafted by the Chicago Bears in 1953.
Â
With the addition of Wahlin, the Runnin' Utes now have five newcomers having recently signed
Deivon Smith (Mississippi State / Georgia Tech) along with
Cole Bajema (Michigan / Washington),
Lawson Lovering (Central HS / Colorado) and
Hunter Erickson (BYU / SLCC).
