SALT LAKE CITY – Courtney Brown and
Kennedy Schoennauer both appeared on the scoresheet multiple times and
Kasey Wardle posted a career-high seven saves as the University of Utah women's soccer team rolled to 5-0 victory over the Utah Valley Wolverines on Wednesday evening at Ute Field in Salt Lake City.
This makes back-to-back seasons in which the Utes have started 3-1-1, while UVU falls to 2-2-1
"What an incredible performance against a very good Utah Valley team tonight," said head coach
Hideki Nakada. "I was impressed with our Utes for coming out the way we did and proud of them for responding well from last Sunday. We were incredibly mature and clinical in the final third and it truly was a great team performance tonight."
It took the Utes no time at all to get on the scoreboard, thanks to
Kelly Bullock, who stole the ball inside the 18-yard box in the third minute and rifled a left-footed shot past goalkeeper Idalia Serrano for a 1-0 lead. Bullock's score at the 2:21 mark goes down as the program's earliest goal since Natalie Vukic's tally 40 seconds into a match against Utah State in 2017.
The home team doubled its lead in the 18th minute, when a
Maryn Granger pass led Schoennauer towards the UVU goal and a perfect through ball from Schoennauer found
Taliana Kaufusi, who slipped a shot past the keeper for her second goal of the year.
The chance that led to Utah's third score of the period started with a scoring opportunity for UVU that ended with the ball in Wardle's hands. Her distribution put the ball at the feet of Brown, who passed ahead to Schoennauer and the freshman's service put
Kyla Jennings one-on-one with the keeper in the 30th minute. Jennings outmaneuvered Serrano before firing a shot into the net for her first goal of 2023 and a 3-0 edge that was still intact at halftime.
Utah's three first half tallies represented their highest total in the opening 45 minutes since they scored four times in the first half against North Dakota State on Aug. 27, 2017.
In the 49th minute, another scoring chance for the home team resulted in a penalty kick and it was Brown who took advantage, easily converting with a right-footed rocket into the top right corner for her second score of 2023.
Kaela Standish added one more in the 80th minute when a pass from
Brooklyn Blaylock sent her sprinting towards the UVU net and, after shaking a defender inside the box, Standish booted in her side's fifth goal of the match.
On defense, the Utes spent the night frustrating a Wolverine team that matched their hosts' total in shots with 11 and earned all eight corners that were awarded in the contest. Wardle's first save was a diving stop in the 11th minute and she snagged another in the 21st. A
Maryn Granger clearance off the line helped keep the visitors scoreless in the 30th minute.
Wardle denied two more opportunities in the initial half, but UVU kept pushing in the final frame and had their best chance to score off a free kick in the 71st minute, only for Brown to boot the ball off the line to keep the net clean. Two more stops from Wardle over the final 20 minutes locked up the sophomore's second clean sheet of the year.
"This was a tough stretch playing three games in seven days," said Nakada, "but I couldn't be happier with the level of focus and intensity our players came out from the kickoff. We will enjoy this result tonight and we'll shift our focus to our next match tomorrow."
