CORVALLIS, Ore. – Taliana Kaufusi and
Kennedy Schoennauer fired in goals and the University of Utah women's soccer team overcame a first half deficit to record a 2-2 draw with the Oregon State Beavers on Thursday night in Pac-12 Conference action at Paul Lorenz Field in Corvallis, Ore.
Utah's 2023 ledger now reads 4-3-4, compared to 3-3-4 for OSU. The Utes have now extended their road unbeaten streak to seven matches, which continues to be the best in program history to start a season.
"Soccer can be cruel," said head coach
Hideki Nakada, "and I am gutted for our team tonight. We played our best 90 minutes of the season and I felt we did more than enough to win the match but it wasn't meant to be.
"We created numerous quality opportunities throughout the match which led to scoring two and hitting the crossbar or post four times but two unforced errors led to their goals and we needed to be better in those moments."
The match's scoreless tie was nearly broken early, with two Oregon State tries in the first five minutes narrowly missing the target, followed by seven Utah shots over a 15-minute period, two of which were on frame and one more that clanged off the woodwork. The Utes would end the first period with a 13-9 edge in that statistic, but the visitors could not get on the scoreboard.
The Beavers found the lone score of the half in the 31st minute, when a through ball off the foot of McKenna Martinez led Carly Carraher into the 18-yard box and her right-footed boot rolled into the net for a 1-0 lead the home team would maintain into halftime.
For more than 25 minutes after the break, the Utes tried to unearth an equalizer, at one point earning five corner kicks in a span of just over five minutes, but it wasn't until the 70:18 mark that Kaufusi evened the score. That match-tying tally was set up by great run down the right side of the field by
Kelly Bullock and her cross into the six-yard box found Kaufusi's foot and the senior redirected the ball into the net to even the score.
Less than 10 minutes later, the visiting side took its initial lead of the contest on Schoennauer's first collegiate goal. A pass from
Courtney Brown sent
Lilliah Blum down the right side of the attacking zone and her cross deflected off the head of Kaufusi to Schoennauer and the freshman unleashed a rocket into the net to make the score 2-1. Blum's assist counted for her first collegiate point.
Unfortunately for the away side, that lead only lasted until the 82nd minute, when Martinez equalized for the Beavers and, despite churning out eight more shots in the final eight minutes, the Utes could not find away to move back in front.
Utah ended the night with an overwhelming 27-16 edge in shots and also sent in more on-target efforts by a margin of 11-9. Both of those numbers were a season-high for the squad and the 12 corners they were awarded matched their highest total of the season in that category.
"It is incredibly painful not to be going home with three points," said Nakada, "but I also feel optimistic for Sunday and moving forward if we can continue to perform the way we did tonight."
