Scouting Oregon State
The Beavers started the season by going 3-2-1 in their first six matches, with triumphs over San Francisco, UC San Diego and UC Irvine, but since then they've been held without a goal in three straight contests. OSU totaled 32 shots over those matchups, but they're still searching for their first tally since Valerie Tobias found the back of the net with what turned out to be the game-winning score against UC Irving on Sept. 7.
Tobias is one of two players who has collected multiple goals for the Beavers so far in 2023, with her first of the year coming on Aug. 24 to help OSU earn a victory over UCSD. McKenna Martinez has been the squad's most formidable scoring threat, as she's logged a team-high three scores while also firing off 44 total shots, the Pac-12's highest total. Martinez's season-high of 11 tries came on Sept. 17 in a scoreless tie with Montana.
In goal, Hailey Coll has not missed a start for OSU and she's rewarded her team with three clean sheets and a combined shutout in her second year as the Beavers' starter. Coll's season-high of eight stops come in OSU's season-opener against SFU and the 35 stops she's piled up rank fifth in the Pac-12. Coll will be looking for a measure of redemption against the Utes, who put up six goals against the Beavers in 2023.
All Time Against Oregon State
The Utes and the Beavers have met 14 times heading into Thursday's tilt and Utah has compiled an 8-5 edge in the series with one tie. OSU won three of the first four bouts, but the Utes then took four straight from their conference foes and they've also won the last two meetings. The last time the squads locked horns in Corvallis ended in a win for the home team, however, thanks in large part to Sydney Studer hat trick.
Last Time Against Oregon State
The Utes crafted their most impressive offensive showing of the 2022 season when OSU came to Salt Lake City on Oct. 9. Five different Utes got on the scoresheet in a 6-0 trouncing that represents the program's best scoring output under coach
Hideki Nakada.
Courtney Brown was responsible for two of Utah's scores, while the defense permitted only one shot on goal.
Scouting Oregon
The first month of the 2023 season has not been kind to the Ducks, who are still searching for their first victory despite logging a pair of draws. They dropped their Pac-12 opener on Sept. 22 to Arizona by a 3-0 score and will have a chance to bounce back against Colorado on Thursday before hosting the Utes on Sunday. The Ducks will also be attempting to jump-start an offense that has managed only one goal over their previous five matches.
Callan Harrington, Ajanae Respass and Ryann Reynolds have been Oregon's goal scorers through nine clashes. Respass served as the team's leading scorer in 2022, when she found the back of the net four times and also racked up 10 points. No one on coach Graeme Abel's roster has taken more shots than freshman Cameron Bourne, but the Washington native is trying to get on the scoresheet for the first time.
Sophomore Maddy Goldberg has stepped into the starting keeper spot and hasn't missed a minute of action for Oregon during the current campaign. Her best showing so far came against Missouri State on Aug. 27, when she turned away eight shots on goal and was rewarded with her first clean sheet of the year.
All Time Against Oregon
In 18 total meetings, the Utes have gotten the better of the Ducks 10 times, compared to six Oregon wins and two ties. Utah took four of the first five tussles, including the 1996 showdown that kicked-off the series. The first 12 times these programs met, the Utes came out on top 10 times, but the Ducks have begun to close that gap of late. Their wins in 2017, 2018, 2021 and 2022 have slowly erased Utah's lead.
Last Time Against Oregon
The Ducks emerged victorious from the 2022 edition of the rivalry at Ute Field despite not registering a shot on goal. The only score of the evening came on a Utah own goal early in the second half. Despite the home side firing off 16 total shot, seven of which were on-target, they were unable to get on the scoreboard in a 1-0 defeat.
Penalty Kickers
The Utes have earned four penalty kicks so far in 2023, tied for third-most in the nation and a total that already eclipses their number in that statistic from 2022. The last time Utah was awarded more than four PKs in a season was in 2008, when they took six.
Racking Up Results on the Road
For the first time in program history, the Utes have gone undefeated through their first six road fixtures. They kept that streak alive with a draw at Weber State on Thursday and a 1-0 Sunday win at Colorado State. The program's previous best start on the road involved four matches without a defeat.
Looking at the Pac-12 Leaderboard
One glance at the Pac-12's statistical leaderboard will uncover several Utes in the top five in various categories. No one in the conference has more assists than
Courtney Brown, who's accumulated four, while
Katie O'Kane's 33 shots rank her fifth. In goal,
Kasey Wardle and
Evelyn Vitali have piled up 53 saves, the Pac-12's highest total.
Bullock's Early Breakthrough
Kelly Bullock put the Utes on the board in the third minute in what became a 5-0 trouncing of Utah Valley on Aug. 30. Bullock's score at the 2:21 mark goes down as the program's earliest goal since Natalie Vukic's tally 40 seconds into a match against Utah State in 2017.
First Half Fireworks
Utah's attack was also responsible for three first period tallies in their rout of the Wolverines. Those three first half scores represented their highest total in the opening 45 minutes since they scored four times in the first half against North Dakota State on Aug. 27, 2017.
Ring the Bella
Bella Woods tallied Utah's first goal of the season in the team's Aug. 17 meeting with N.C. State. That made her the first Utah freshman to register the program's season-opening score since Erin Dalley in 2007. Woods also picked up an assist in the Utes' win over College of Charleston.
NCAA Tournament History
The Utes are aiming to reach the NCAA Tournament for the ninth time in school history and the first time since 2019. Utah put together its best postseason finish in 2016, when they forged a path all the way to the Sweet 16.
By The Numbers
The list of players back in the fold for
Hideki Nakada's club includes just about all of the team's statistical leaders from 2022.
Taliana Kaufusi, who piled up a team-high six goals, is back for her senior campaign, while assist leader
Ryann Cull has returned after collecting four helpers a season ago. Kaufusi also led the squad in shots in 2022 with 41, followed by fellow returners
Katie O'Kane, who racked up 28, and
Courtney Brown, who posted 26.
In goal, all four of Utah's keepers,
Evelyn Vitali,
Kasey Wardle,
Megan Quiggle and
Taylor Prigge, are back for another season. No one on the roster collected more saves than Vitali's 48 in 2022, while Wardle crafted a 0.70 goals against average. Utah's keepers combined to record seven shutouts a season ago.
Senior Six
Utah's six-person senior class is comprised of
Courtney Brown,
Brooke Hale,
Katie O'Kane,
Taliana Kaufusi,
Megan Quiggle and
Ragan Vanschalkwyk. This group has combined to take the field in over 200 matches for the Utes and Brown is the one player remaining from the 2019 squad that reached the NCAA Tournament.
New Utes
Utah's 2023 roster includes seven new faces and that list of newcomers is comprised of freshmen
Kennedy Schoennauer,
Lilliah Blum,
Bella Woods,
Rylan Park,
Mia Becarevic and
Izzy Smith and sophomore transfer
Alex Schoenstadt.
Woods, Becarevic and Smith were all part of an Alta High School squad that made a run to the state playoffs in 2022, while Schoennauer helped her squad capture the CCA Division II Championship, Blum was named her conference's player of the year and Park was an all-league selection.
Schoenstadt played her freshman season with Ole Miss and helped the Rebels achieve a winning record, as well as record nine clean sheets.
Pac-12 Preseason Coaches Poll
The Pac-12 released its preseason coaches poll on Aug. 14 and the UCLA Bruins garnered nine first place votes and landed in the top spot in the poll. The Utes were ranked 10th.
