SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah men's basketball team returned to the win column on Friday inside the Huntsman Center as it dismantled Utah Tech 84-53.
Utah (4-1) got test early in the first half after going up 8-0 to start the contest as Utah Tech answered with an 11-2 run to take an 11-10 lead – which was the first time the Utes trailed at home so far this season. However, a quick 9-0 spurt followed nine-straight points from
Keanu Dawes shortly thereafter sent Utah into the break ahead 42-26.
Utah really broke the game open out of the 14:43 media timeout in the second frame behind a 16-5 that put the Runnin' Utes ahead 68-41 with 7:55 left to play. The Utes would unload their bench with 2:01 left to go and held the Trailblazers (1-4) to just 1-of-4 shooting in that remaining time.
Gabe Madsen once again led all scorers with 19 points on 8-for-17 shooting with a pair of steals. Dawes was once again excellent off the bench for the Utes with a season-high 14 points and 9 boards on 6-of-9 shooting.
Mason Madsen finished with 12 points – all of which came in the second half.
Mike Sharavjamts rounded things out for the Utes with 10 points, 4 boards and 5 assists.
POSTGAME NOTES
- With 19 points Friday, Gabe Madsen jumps Britton Johnsen (1997-98, 2000-03) on the all-time scoring list to take sole possession of No. 38 with 1,064 career points as a Ute
- Gabe Madsen is now two 3-pointers shy of passing Shaun Green (235; 2005-09) for the No. 4 spot on the all-time 3-pointers list
- With 50 boards tonight, Utah has not recorded at least 50 rebounds in three of its five games so far
- Miro Little finished with career-highs in both rebounds (11) and assists (8) to go with 4 points
- Freshman Joul Karram recorded his first-career basket and points with 41 ticks left in the game with a dunk off of an offensive board
- Hunter Erickson tied his career-high in blocks with 3
- Utah held the Trailblazers to a .303 shooting clip (20-for-66), the lowest shooting percentage for an opponent this season
- Utah outscored Utah Tech in the paint 44-24
- Utah assisted on 24 of its 32 field-goals on Friday and marks the third time its dished out 20-plus assists this year
