SALT LAKE CITY – It was a momentous night for Utah men's basketball with the Runnin' Utes earning their 1,900th victory as a program on top of
Gabe Madsen joining the 1,000 points on Thursday as they cruised past Central Arkansas 98-63 inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
Utah was locked in from its opening possession and led wire-to-wire against Central Arkansas (0-2). The Utes jumped out to a ferocious 31-10 lead by the 8:14 mark in the opening half after
Mason Madsen knocked down Utah's eighth 3-pointer of the game. An 11-0 run then ensued for Utah before M. Madsen made it 45-18 at the break with Utah shooting 10-for-25 from long range.
In the second offensive possession for the Utes coming out of the break,
Miro Little found a wide-open G. Madsen gliding down the paint for an easy lay-in off the out of bounds play for his 1,000th and 1,001th career point.
The Rochester, Minn., product joined an elite group of Runnin' Utes becoming the 42nd player in program history to hit the 1,000-career points mark in his 89th game as a Ute. Ironically, G. Madsen hit the mark on a lay-up and not from long-range as the sharp-shoot is known for.
However, that did not stop the 3-point barrage from Utah (2-0) – who tied its own school record set just this past Monday in the season-opener against Alcorn State with 19 triples on the night. The Utes finished 19-of-50 (.380) from downtown as a team while G. Madsen knocked down six more triples before finishing with a game-high 25 points. The six 3-pointers moves his career total to 225 and saw him pass Jordan Loveridge (223; 2012-16) for fifth on the all-time list.
M. Madsen chipped in with 15 points once again, knocking down five 3-pointers of his own.
Ezra Ausar finished with 13 points on 3-of-3 shooting while knocking down 7-of-8 from the line.
Mike Sharavjamts once again wooed the crowd with his vision while scoring 13 points and flirted with a triple-double behind eight rebounds and eight assists on top of three steals and two blocks.
Jake Wahlin looked very comfortable on the floor in just his second-career start, finishing with nine points, six steals and four blocks. Little added nine points of his own to go with five rebounds and five assists while
Keanu Dawes filled up the stat sheet once again with seven points, 11 rebounds, five assists and two blocks.
