SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah men's basketball team put a bow on its six-game homestand to close out the 2024 calendar year inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center with an 89-59 victory over Florida A&M Tuesday night.
Utah was locked in on offensive out of gates, taking an 18-3 lead by the 12:18 mark hit before taking a 22-point lead – its largest of the first-half on six occasions before heading into the locker room on top 50-31.
Mike Sharavjamts was on a tear in the opening frame for Utah (8-2), scoring 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting – three of which came from the beyond the arc.
The Runnin' Utes were dialed in on offense, assisting on 14 of their 18 made shots while shooting .545 from the floor collectively. It also converted 10 Florida A&M turnovers into 16 points in the first 20 minutes of action while also outscoring the Rattlers 20-4 in the paint.
Utah then pushed its lead to 73-38 by the time the 7:12 media break happened behind a 23-5 run. The Rattlers (3-6) cut the lead down to 75-49 with a 9-0 run, but the Runnin' Utes were clicking on all cylinders even as head coach
Craig Smith unloaded his bench with every available player seeing action on the night to secure the 89-59 victory.
Mason Madsen and Sharavjamts tied for a game-high of 15 points with Madsen shooting 5-for-9 from deep to go with 3 swipes while Sharavjamts was an efficient 6-of-7 shooting – three of which were from downtown – with 4 assists. The 15 points tied a season-high for Madsen.
Ezra Ausar chipped in with 12 points of his own, knocking down 5-of-6 from the field.
Lawson Lovering rounded things out with 10 points on 5 boards for Utah.
POSTGAME NOTES
- With the win, Utah is now 16-2 all-time in its final home non-conference game of the year since the turn of the century (2000-01)
- With 9 points on Tuesday, Gabe Madsen passes Jimmy Soto (1,153; 1989-93) for No. 29 on the all-time scoring list with 1,158 on the all-time career scoring list at Utah
- Hunter Erickson made his first-career start on Tuesday
- Brady Smith recorded his first basket and points as a Runnin' Ute and at the Division I level when he banked one in with 1:14 to go
- Utah converted 18 turnovers into a 27-5 edge in points off turnovers
- The Utes also dominated the paint, outscoring Florida A&M 44-20
- Utah's bench scored a season-high 57 points – the most since 66 against MVSU in Nov. 8, 2019
- The 25 assists are the sixth time Utah has dished out 20-plus in a single game this season
- The 11 steals were the second-highest total this season and the third time Utah has recorded double-digit steals this year
