RIVERSIDE, Calif. –
TJ Clarkson hit his second career grand slam, while the Utah pitching staff tallied nine strikeouts as the Utes defeated California Baptist, 7-1, on Sunday at James W. Totman Stadium. The win is the third in a row for the Utes, who are now 3-1 on the young season.
Catcher
Hunter Antillon had a pair of hits and scored a run out of the nine-hole, while five other Utes broke into the hit column as well. Leadoff man and shortstop
Core Jackson scored a pair of runs, and third baseman
Tyler Quinn singled and scored a run, reaching base safely in each of his four games as a Ute.
Right-hander
Jaden Harris dealt 4.1 innings of shutout ball in his first start of the season, tying his career-high with seven strikeouts. He took a no-hitter into the fourth inning and otherwise allowed just a pair of walks and a hit batsman.
Fellow right-hander
Jackson Elder made his Utah debut in relief of Harris and went on to earn the win after a 2.2-inning outing, in which Elder allowed one run on three hits, fanning two. Freshman
Colter McAnelly debuted with 1.2 innings on the bump before southpaw
Micah Ashman was called upon for the final out.
Six Utes came to bat in the opening inning as the club plated a run early. Jackson led off the game with a single up the middle, then ended up on third after
Kai Roberts was hit by a pitch and Quinn flew out. With runners at the corners, Clarkson worked a walk; Roberts had taken off for second base on the 3-1 pitch and a throw down from the catcher allowed Jackson to sneak home.
A passed ball followed by a bases-loaded double play ball allowed the Utes to tack on two more runs in the third inning.
Then in the fourth, Clarkson gave the Utes some insurance with the second grand slam of his career.
Ethan Thomas reached on a throwing error to begin the inning, then an Antillon single paired with Jackson being hit by a pitch set the stage for Clarkson with the bases loaded. He sent the very first pitch to deep right center field by the videoboard as it bounced back into play.
Clarkson originally stood on second base thinking he had clubbed a three-run double, but an umpires' conference established the ball had cleared the wall in right-center field for a grand slam. His other grand slam came against Mercer in 2022, while the last by a Ute came off the bat of
Jayden Kiernan in April 2023.
CBU got one run back in the seventh inning with a solo home run, but that would be all for the Lancers' offense.
Elder retired both batters he faced upon entry in the fifth inning, then worked a 1-2-3 inning in the sixth. McAnelly allowed just a walk in the eighth but otherwise induced a fly ball, grounder and pop up.
The Utes are back in action next Friday, Feb. 23, when the squad begins the Tony Gwynn Legacy Tournament. It'll start in La Jolla, California, when Utah takes on UC San Diego in a game beginning at 7 p.m. MT from Triton Ballpark.
