Utes in the Pros: Super Bowl LVIII

LAS VEGAS - Just one game remains in the NFL's chase for the Vince Lombardi Trophy, and it'll come down to Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday at Allegiant Stadium as the AFC Champion Kansas City Chiefs take on the San Francisco 49ers out of the NFC. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m. MT and CBS will have television coverage in the United States. Pregame coverage begins with The NFL Today at noon MT.

Both squads feature a Utah Football connection as former Utes punter Mitch Wishnowsky (2016-18) is now in his fifth season with the 49ers, while Chiefs defensive quality control coach Alex Whittingham (2013-17) is on the home stretch of his sixth season with the franchise and fifth in his current role. It's the eighth straight Super Bowl with at least one Utah tie.

Wishnowsky is set to play in his second Super Bowl; coincidentally it's a rematch after the 49ers fell to Kansas City in Super Bowl LIV—that game included two punts from the then-rookie. This season, he averaged 47.7 yards on 52 punts during the regular season. He's needed to punt only five times in the playoffs, tallying an average of 47 yards per boot. Wishnowsky also is the go-to holder for San Francisco on PAT and field goal attempts.

Kansas City is in the Super Bowl for the fourth time in the last five years, including when Whittingham and the organization raised the Lombardi Trophy in Super Bowl LIV and LVII. During the 2023 regular season, Whittingham's defense ranked second in the NFL both with 289.8 total yards and 17.3 points allowed per game.

Jaylon Johnson Seals NFC Win in Pro Bowl
Chicago Bears defensive back Jaylon Johnson, who played collegiately at Utah from 2017-19 and was a 2019 All-American, made his Pro Bowl debut last Sunday in Orlando. Johnson, who has now played four NFL seasons, made a game-sealing pass breakup to end a late red-zone opportunity for the AFC and secure the 64-59 win for the NFC.

He was joined in Orlando by Bears teammate and fellow Pro Bowl defensive end Montez Sweat.

Johnson started 14 regular season games for the Bears this season—his fourth in the NFL and all with the Bears. He totaled 36 tackles, a forced fumble and 10 passes defended (4 INT), including a pick-six in Week 7 against the Las Vegas Raiders. His 10 passes defended ranked second on the team and his interception total a career-high, helping Johnson earn both All-Pro honors and Bears Defensive Player of the Year.
