SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Baseball team was scoreless through seven innings with No. 3 Oregon State, but the Beavers broke the ice in the eighth with seven runs on five hits in an 8-1 ballgame on Saturday at Smith's Ballpark.
Core Jackson and
Kaden Carpenter each went 2-for-4 at the plate for Utah (11-6, 2-3 Pac-12) as the team combined for seven hits. Though his four-game hitting streak was snapped,
Kai Roberts walked twice to extend his reached-base streak to 16 games.
Starting pitcher
Bryson Van Sickle worked into the fifth inning and did not allow a run, striking out a season-high seven Beavers. He scattered four hits and walked three before being relieved by
Colter McAnelly, who had a 3.1-inning outing with three strikeouts. In the end, McAnelly (2-2) received the loss.
Cameron Gurney came up in a pinch hit situation in the ninth inning and brought in
Matt Flaharty on an RBI groundout for the Utes' lone run in the game.
Van Sickle and the Utes did a nice job to get out of jams in the first two innings. In the opening frame, Travis Bazzana led off the game with a double and took third on a sac bunt, but Van Sickle answered with a strikeout and ground ball. Then in the second, Oregon State had runners on second and third with one away before Van Sickle fanned back-to-back batters.
The fourth inning brought Utah its first big opportunity to get on the scoreboard. Roberts led off with a walk and stole second, then
Drake Digiorno was hit by a pitch. Carpenter then grounded out to put the duo in scoring position with two outs, but a fly ball would end the threat.
Roberts worked a leadoff walk in the sixth and later was on third thanks to a Digiorno double. But the Utes were unable to push a run across after a bunt was popped up and a ground ball ended the inning.
Flaharty led off the ninth inning in a pinch hit situation for second baseman
Bruer Webster and sent the first pitch up the middle for a base hit. Then with Gurney up to bat, Flaharty sprinted toward second base on a wild pitch then took third when the Beavers couldn't find the ball.
