SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Baseball team trailed 9-0 after three innings to No. 3-ranked Oregon State, but the Utes kept their poise and answered with 14 runs between the fourth and seventh innings on the way to a 14-11 victory on Sunday at Smith's Ballpark.
The nine-run comeback is the largest in a victory for the team since 2012—when the Utes had their first baseball season in the Pac-12 Conference. It surpassed a seven-run rally in a walk-off win over Arizona State on May 28, 2017 for the largest in that time.
Every starter in the Utah lineup had a hit as the team combined for 16 altogether. Seven players had multi-hit performances, led by
Matt Flaharty's two doubles and career-high four RBI.
Kaden Carpenter drove in three runs, tying a career-best.
Kai Roberts was 2-for-4, drove in a run and scored once to extend his reached-base streak to 17 consecutive games.
Randon Hostert earned the win (3-1) on the mound with three-innings of one-run relief with four strikeouts, no walks and four hits allowed.
Jaden Harris retired four of the six batters he faced before southpaw
Micah Ashman came on for the final out and earned his 14
th career save—tying Ashman for second-most in recorded program history. It was also his Pac-12-leading fifth save of this season.
Oregon State pulled ahead early with two runs in the first inning, three in the second and a four-spot in the third to take a 9-0 lead. Beavers starter Eric Segura was efficient over the first three innings as he retired the Utes nine up, nine down.
Ernesto Lugo-Canchola relieved Utah starter
Brett Porthan during the third inning, and after Lugo-Canchola worked a 1-2-3 fourth, the Utes batted around in the home half and plated six runs on six hits. An errant pickoff attempt with runners at the corners allowed
Core Jackson to score from third base, before
Drake Digiorno lofted a single into left field to bring in Roberts.
Four batters later, Carpenter began a sequence of three straight RBI hits as he drove in a pair with his single, before
Dakota Duffalo smacked an RBI single to score
Tyler Quinn and Flaharty launched one of his two doubles—this one scoring Carpenter and cutting the deficit to 9-6.
The Utes surrendered a run via an Oregon State sac fly in the fifth, but countered with a three-spot in the bottom of the inning helped by three doubles. Digiorno led off with a double down the left field line into the corner, scoring when
TJ Clarkson sent a gapper to right-center for a double of his own. Two batters later, Quinn had a near carbon-copy of Clarkson's at bat, sending the first pitch again to right-center field for an RBI double.
The rally wasn't complete yet, but Utah now trailed by just two runs, at 10-8.
Lugo-Canchola allowed just a one-out single in the sixth before coming back with two strikeouts and ending the threat. Then in the home half, Roberts came up and singled to score Jackson and narrow the deficit to one run.
Two more strikeouts in the top of the seventh set the stage for a five-run bottom of the inning, as Utah pulled in front and never trailed again. Carpenter stepped up with runners at the corners and one away, sending a laser into left field and bringing home
Michael Davinni with the tying run.
Duffalo then was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Flaharty, who lifted an 0-2 pitch into right center for his second double of the day as Duffalo, Carpenter and Quinn all scored to break the tie and give the Utes a 13-10 lead. After an Oregon State pitching change, Jackson drove in an insurance run with a single into right field.
Mason Guerra got one back for the Beavers on a solo homer in the eighth inning, but that would be all Oregon State could muster in its own rally effort. Harris walked his first batter but responded with a double play and fly ball to end the frame.
He induced fly balls on his first two batters in the ninth, handing the baton to Ashman after a two-out single. Oregon State leadoff man Travis Bazzana singled off Ashman to bring the tying run to the plate, but Ashman then got Micah McDowell to fly out and give the Utes the victory.
