2024 Spring Football: Four Practices In, 11 To Go

SALT LAKE CITY – For any football fan, one of the best sounds to hear at a game is the crack of the pads as athletes line-up to compete – and today's practice for the University of Utah, the first with full pads, sounded like fall as the Utes got after it at the Spence and Cleone Eccles Football Center.
Week two will bring back familiar faces with the Utes hosting Pro Day on Thursday, March 21 and its annual Coaches Clinic on Saturday, March 23. Miles Battle (CB), Keaton Bills (OL), Cole Bishop (DB), Jonah Elliss (DL), Sataoa Laumea (OL), Emery Simmons (WR), Sione Vaki (DB), Devaughn Vele (WR) and Thomas Yassmin (TE) will all participate in Pro Day with former head coach Urban Meyer being the keynote speaker at the Coaches Clinic.
Four practices in, the Utes continue to improve and show the incredible depth that has come to Salt Lake City this spring. The media attended practice on Tuesday, getting to talk to head coach Kyle Whittingham about how week one went, and what is ahead.
On how practice went today…
"It was a good practice. It was the first day in full pads and our first live work of camp. We definitely have a lot to work on, but it was just practice No. 4 and the first with all the gear on, so there was always going to be a learning curve for the guys that haven't practiced at this pace. We continue to make progress though. Four down with 11 to go, so far I would say that we are on track."
On how Isaac Wilson is settling in so far…
"Isaac is looking really good. He is making the transition to Power Five football very well. He doesn't get overwhelmed by the speed of the game or the complexity of the offense. He has assimilated to the offense. He is getting quality reps. Him and Brandon Rose are splitting the No. 2 reps and it is a good battle going on."
On what the priority is with Cameron Rising this spring…
"Priority No. 1 is keeping him upright and getting him to the first game healthy. He is shaking off some rust and getting the arm strength back. But he is our leader and it is a whole other field when he is out here."
On what stands out about Dorian Singer's game…
"It is very apparent the way he operates and the way he moves, you can tell he has a lot of skill and ability to play the wide receiver position."
On what he has seen from the safeties so far…
"We have a good group of safeties. We have four guys that are really taking charge with Nate Ritchie and Johnathan Hall doing a really nice job and performing well. Alaka'i Gilman, who just transferred in from Stanford, is showing a lot of promise and then Tao Johnson we think is going to be really special. He has made the transition from cornerback to safety seamlessly and he appears to be very comfortable there."
