SALT LAKE CITY – In a day that saw all four seasons of weather flow through Salt Lake City, the University of Utah Football team wrapped up its seventh practice of spring ball.
With 156 days before the season kicks off on Thursday, Aug. 29, the Utes continue to prep for 2024 with each position group improving every day.
Each Tuesday, the local media comes to practice to talk to offensive players with running back Micah Bernard giving an update on his game, the newcomers in the RB room and what he's seeing from the quarterbacks.
On how he is feeling…
"I'm feeling good, feeling amazing. I'm still getting my legs back a bit, but everything's coming naturally still. I still know the playbook. We added some things here and there that I've still got to learn, but it's going well."
On what he's seeing from Isaac Wilson and Brandon Rose…
"Brandon Rose is more confident this year; I can see that in him…he's gotten the playbook and he's really coming along. He's making fast decisions. He has a nice arm; it looks good. Isaac Wilson is coming along pretty well too. Nice arm. He's learning the playbook and getting there."
On the young guys in the running back room…
"They're looking good. They're locking in. They want to play. When you come in as a freshman, you're not really thinking about playing…Now that they have a chance to go out there, they're locking in, understanding the offense and what needs to be done. Me, Jaylon Glover and Charlie Vincent have been teaching those guys."
Head coach Kyle Whittingham also met with the media on Tuesday, letting the group know that it was the best practice to date in spring while also giving an update on the secondary and his thoughts on how to instill toughness in his program.
On how the team looked today…
"It was a good day. I am going to go out on a limb and say that was our best practice out of the seven we have had. You expect that and hope for that as you go through the progression. You hope to get better and better with your execution and your assignments. It was an excellent day. We've got playmakers out there. There were guys out there making plays all over on both sides of the ball – which is a good thing."
On Kenan Johnson…
"He has been making plays since day one. He has been a great addition to our football team. He has really helped solidify that secondary."
On how he tries to instill toughness in his program…
"It is a daily thing. You do it every day with your demands and expectations. How you handle yourself body language wise, in the weight room, all of that. It is a cumulative effect. Everyone is on board and bought in to the fact that we want to be the mentally and physically toughest team in the country. That is what we strive for."
