SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Baseball team strung together hits early and often as the Utes posted a Pac-12 era program record 30 and claimed a 27-4 win over in-state foe Utah Valley on Tuesday morning at Smith's Ballpark.
Utah (24-11) scored in every inning on the way to a season-high 27 runs, the most since posting 29 last April in a midweek game at BYU. Every starter in the Utes' lineup had a hit and all 13 players to have a plate appearance reached base at least once. It was highlighted by a 5-for-7 line for
Kai Roberts and a 5-for-6 day from
TJ Clarkson; the five hits for each were the most by a Ute this season and one short of tying the program record.
Core Jackson went 4-for-6 with four runs scored and was a triple short of the cycle.
Kaden Carpenter was 3-for-4, scored twice, had a career-high five RBI and needed a home run for the cycle.
Drake Digiorno contributed three hits.
In addition to Carpenter, Clarkson (4),
Tyler Quinn (4) and
Karson Bodily (4) led the way in the RBI column. Quinn's RBI total was his most as a Ute and Bodily's total tied his most with the club.
Roberts also scored five runs, the most by a Ute in the 2024 season and one away from tying the all-time high for the program.
Eleven of Utah's hits went for extra bases: a season-high six doubles, two triples and three home runs. Jackson and
Matt Flaharty homered back-to-back in the seventh inning, while Quinn also went yard on the day.
It was a staff day for Utah on the mound as
Ernesto Lugo-Canchola (2-0) made the start and allowed one earned run in three innings of work.
Bransen Kuehl came on for two innings and
Brett Porthan (3.0) and
Carter Wall (1.0) did not allow a run over the final four innings of the ballgame.
The Utes led 5-4 after three and a half innings of play, then proceeded to rip off back-to-back five-spots in both the fourth and fifth innings, three more runs in the sixth, seven in the seventh and a pair of runs in the eighth.
Jack Kleveno entered the game as a pinch hitter in the seventh inning and earned his first collegiate hit with a double into the right field corner. He would eventually score and also earn his first RBI as a Ute when the team batted around later in the inning.
Flaharty's homer in the seventh inning brought him to three dingers in his last eight at bats. He now has five career home runs as a Ute after entering Sunday's game at Arizona State with two in his career.
