OREM, Utah – A five-run fifth inning highlighted a momentum swing to the Utah Baseball team as the Utes pulled in front and never looked back, taking down Utah Valley by a 13-8 score on Tuesday night at UCCU Ballpark.
Utah is now 20-8 on the season and has won nine of its last 11 games.
The Utes belted out 12 hits from eight players in the lineup, including four multi-hit performances. Leadoff man
Core Jackson had a team-high three RBI and scored a run,
Hunter Antillon and
Tyler Quinn each homered, and the team combined for five doubles.
Karson Bodily had a pair during a two-inning span, and
Kaden Carpenter,
TJ Clarkson and Jackson each had a two-bagger of their own.
Clarkson hit safely for the sixth game in a row and
Drake Digiorno reached safely for the 17
th straight game with a two-hit, two-RBI night.
On the mound,
Jackson Elder (2-1) picked up the win in a 3.1-inning relief appearance in which Elder allowed just a run and struck out four Wolverines. Six different Ute pitchers saw action in the game and combined for 11 strikeouts.
UVU used two home runs to take a 4-0 lead in the home half of the first. The Wolverines led off the inning with a first-pitch long ball and added a three-run shot later on.
The Utes got two runs back with one each in the third and fourth innings.
Kai Roberts worked a one-out walk in the third and scored after a pair of singles. The latter came from Clarkson to score Roberts from second base.
An error by the Utes in the bottom of the third allowed a fifth UVU run to come across, but in the fourth, Antillon washed it out with his second home run of the year, a solo shot onto the berm in left center field that cut the Utes' deficit to 5-2.
Momentum swung into the Utah dugout with a five-run fifth inning and a three-spot in the sixth. The Utes had only two hits in the fifth but took advantage of three walks and an error to post a crooked number on the scoreboard. Bodily slapped a gapper to left-center field for a two-run double, then a bases-loaded walk to Jackson brought in Bodily to tie the score at five.
Two batters later, Digiorno sent a single up the middle to plate Antillon and Jackson, giving Utah its first lead of the night at 7-5 after five innings.
Elder did a nice job in the bottom of the fifth to work out of a jam unharmed. A Wolverines single and double gave the home club runners at second and third with nobody out, but Elder kept his poise and answered with two strikeouts plus a fly ball.
Bodily went back to left center in the sixth inning for his second double in as many innings, this time driving in Clarkson. Then Jackson used a two-run double that brought in Bodily and Quinn to end the frame with a 10-5 lead for the Utes.
Freshman southpaw
Billy Bird came on to make his collegiate debut in the bottom of the sixth, inheriting runners at first and second with one out. He fired two strikes to his first batter and induced an inning-ending, 4-6-3 double play. Bird returned to the bump for the seventh and retired the Wolverines in order, with his first collegiate strikeout ending the frame.
Quinn touched 'em all in the top of the eighth, taking the first pitch onto the left field berm for his second homer of the year and swelling the Utes' lead to 11-6.
UVU got two back in the home half of the eighth via a home run, but the Utes plated a pair of their own in the top of the ninth. With Antillon on second and Roberts at first, the pair took off on a double steal. The throw down to third base got away and allowed both to score—bringing the game to its final score of 13-8.
Though it wasn't a save situation,
Micah Ashman came on in the bottom of the ninth and had two strikeouts in a 1-2-3 inning.
