SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah baseball team slugged its way to a series victory against the Washington Huskies on Sunday night, dominating offensively and receiving a solid collective effort from the pitching staff in a 14-3 win at Smith's Ballpark.
Utah is now 26-12 overall on the season and moved to 11-7 mark in Pac-12 Conference play after the team's fifth league series win of the season. The 11-7 conference record puts the Utes into a tie with Oregon for second place in the league standings, while Arizona is two games ahead at 13-5.
Kai Roberts shined at the dish, going 4-for-6 with four RBI, one short of a season-high, and crossing the plate twice. Roberts has now driven in a run in four straight games and hit safely in four of the last five. Roberts' stolen base was his 25th of the season, moving him into a tie for third in program history and two away from tying the single-season program record at 27. He already owns the Utah career record--now at 58.
Drake Digiorno went 3-for-5 offensively with a double and a trio of RBI. Six different Utes recorded an RBI as
TJ Clarkson (2) and
Tyler Quinn (2) both put together multi-RBI games alongside Roberts and Digiorno.
Colter McAnelly (W, 3-2) started the game on the hill for the Utes, throwing five innings and giving up just one run on three hits while striking out five in what became his first Pac-12 win.
The Utes scored early and often in Sunday's victory, crossing the plate three times in the first inning. After McAnelly retired the Huskies 1-2-3 in the top of the first,
Core Jackson led off the home half with a first-pitch single and stole second, before Roberts pushed the first run across with an RBI single. After Roberts stole second, Digiorno plated the second Utes run with a single. Utah would scrap across another run in the inning with a Washington error, taking a 3-0 lead.
Utah tacked on two more runs in the second inning as Roberts and Digiorno both came through with another set of RBI singles to extend the lead to 5-0.
The Huskies scratched a run across in the top of the fourth inning with a solo home run—the first hit of the night for Washington—cutting the Utah lead to 5-1.
The Utes wouldn't score again until the fifth inning but put the game away with a three-spot in the frame. Quinn led off with a single and advanced to second on a bobble in the outfield, followed by a
Karson Bodily bunt single to put runners at the corners with nobody out.
Matt Flaharty picked up an RBI with a single to center and advanced to second on the throw, pushing Bodily to third. Both Bodily and Flaharty would cross the plate on bases-loaded walks in the inning, giving the Utes an 8-1 advantage.
Washington added its second run in the sixth with an RBI groundout before the Utes finished the game with a six-run inning in the eighth. Eight of the first nine batters to make a plate appearance reached as Quinn roped a two-RBI double and later two hit batsmen with the bases loaded brought in a couple runs. Roberts capped the inning with a two-RBI single to right field, giving the Utes a commanding 14-2 lead.
Washington tallied its third and final run with a leadoff solo home run in the top of the ninth.
Brett Porthan entered in relief of McAnelly in the sixth inning, going three innings and giving up one run on three hits while striking out two Huskies.
Randon Hostert entered in the ninth inning, retiring three straight batters after the Huskies' homer.
