SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Baseball team landed a pair of Utes on the ABCA All-West Region teams on Tuesday, as left-handed pitcher
Bryson Van Sickle was tabbed First Team and outfielder
Kai Roberts was placed on the Second Team.
Â
It is the first time in the Power Conference era of the program that Utah has had multiple players named ABCA All-Region.
Â
A native of Eagle Mountain, Utah, Van Sickle made 15 starts, finishing 5-1 with a 2.67 ERA and 69 strikeouts, in a Pac-12 leading 94.1 innings pitched. He became the first Ute to be named Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year after his ERA led the conference; entering the Men's College World Series it ranks No. 12 in the nation. In conference play, Van Sickle's 2.44 ERA ranked second in the Pac-12.
Â
Van Sickle moved into the Friday spot in the rotation in early April; over his next eight outings he delivered six quality starts. The Pac-12 All-Conference selection threw two complete games, becoming the first Ute since 2008 to accomplish that feat in a season. It included an April 12 "Maddux" at Arizona State—that is, a complete game shutout on less than 100 pitches. He needed just 82 pitches to three-hit the Sun Devils that night, striking out eight and walking none. ASU never got the leadoff man aboard or put a runner in scoring position.
Â
Another Utah native out of Lehi, Roberts was a Pac-12 All-Conference selection after putting on one of the most improved seasons in recent program history. He slashed .356 / .430 / .562 in starting all 55 games in center field, ranking sixth in the Pac-12 for batting average and seventh with a .355 clip in conference play. He contributed 27 multi-hit games this past season, the most by a Ute in the Power Conference history of the program.
Â
Roberts capped off his time as a Ute holding both the single-season (33) and career (66) Utah records for stolen bases, with his season total ranking top-10 in the country. He became the career record-holder on April 5 vs. CSUN, then claimed the single-season mark during the series finale vs. UCLA on April 28.
Â
As a team, the Utes recorded 33 wins during the 2024 season—tied for the second-most in program history. The team had for Pac-12 All-Conference First Team selections, tying the most by the program in the Pac-12 era. Late in April, the Utes entered the national rankings with the No. 25 spot in the D1Baseball.com poll. It was the first time that Utah has been ranked in any of the five current major polls.
