FORT WORTH, Texas – University of Utah Baseball rising senior
Micah Ashman was selected by the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday in Round 11 of the MLB Draft, with the 326
th overall pick.
Ashman, a left-handed pitcher out of Sandy, Utah, is the 77
th draft selection in program history and second of this draft; it comes after outfielder
Kai Roberts was picked on Monday by San Diego. Ashman is the second Utah player to be selected by the Tigers; the other was catcher Nate Forbush in the 21
st round of the 1998 draft.
A three-year Ute and two-time Pac-12 All-Conference selection, Ashman has made 72 career appearances, including a program-record 20 saves. He holds a 4-8 career record and 3.36 ERA, and is coming off a 2024 season in which Ashman had 11 saves—the second-most by a Ute all-time for a single season. It also ranked second in the Pac-12 and sixth nationally.
Ashman walked only three batters during his 24 appearances and 26.1 innings on the bump in 2024, holding opposing batters to a .240 batting average. He was included on the preseason and midseason watch lists for the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award, and was ranked by D1Baseball.com as the No. 18 relief pitcher nationally in that site's late-season position rankings.
The success Ashman enjoyed this past year came after a breakout sophomore season in '23, in which he earned his first Pac-12 All-Conference nod. He had nine saves that year, at the time the most by a Ute since 2016. He made 25 appearances as a freshman in 2022, starting a pair of midweek contests in his first year of college ball.
Ashman had a stint this Summer in the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League in Massachusetts. He made four relief appearances with the Chatham Anglers, tallying a 1-0 record, 1.93 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 9.1 innings of work. It was highlighted by a July 4 outing against rival Orleans; Ashman dealt 5.1 innings of shutout, walk-free ball, allowing just two hits and striking out five on the way to the win at Veterans Field. It earned Ashman praise as the Cape League Pitcher of the Week.
He came to the U after playing scholastically for Chad Fife at Jordan High School. Ashman helped his team to a state championship as a freshman and also played basketball while in high school.
