Opening Statement…
I thought we played really well on Saturday night against Arizona State. The guys played with a lot of passion, a lot of energy, executed exceptionally well, handled the, I guess you call them distractions, with the weather was a little bit of a distraction. We changed warm-ups, we had a different warm-up routine. I thought they handled all that stuff as well as they possibly could have, ran the ball exceptionally well in the game. That was probably the biggest key in the entire game is our offensive line just imposed their will from start to finish. Arizona State had been playing really good run defense all year long, up until this game. We put 275 yards of rushing offense together. We didn't throw the ball a ton, but when we did, it was efficient. Devon [Dampier] was very efficient with throwing the football. Defensively, played exceptionally well. In addition, tackled pretty good, played really good pass coverage. I think if you highlight what happened on defense, I would say it was the secondary and the corners in particular, with their pass coverage. Played a lot of man coverage and they were tested quite a bit up the field and held up just about every time. We had a couple [pass interferences] and it wasn't perfect, but very, very pleased and thought it was our best game as a secondary on Saturday night. Special teams were solid, did really good things, had a nice punt returned by Mana Carvalho, blocked a field goal. That blocked field goal was a big play in the game and we were just on the verge of scooping and scoring it, but we just couldn't quite get a handle on it. It negated a scoring opportunity for them and really gave us a little momentum boost. We already had momentum but increased it. Came out of the game healthy, that was a positive. A bunch of sacks and we got credited for five sacks, which is more like us. We had hadn't been sacking the quarterback at our usual rate this year, but that gave us a boost there. Overall, it was a very positive night and a game that that our guys really had prepared outstanding for, as far as the bye week and then the game week. It was really excellent preparation, great attitude, great leadership. And the coaches did a nice job, very proud of the offensive staff, defensive staff for their plans and right on the money with the strategy and bottom line, good to get the win. It's rivalry week, got to go on the road. I guess Big Noon Kickoff will be there, even though it's not the big noon game of the week. It'll be down there and we'll have to have a great week of practice, as always. Between the two teams, there's a lot of similarities, statistically. Both rushing for roughly the same amount, throwing for roughly the same amount, scoring roughly the same amount. Defensively, there's a lot of similarities as well. Both in the upper third of the conference in most of the key stats. Should make for a great matchup and away we go.
