Utah Gets Back on Track with 65-52 Win Over Weber State

SALT LAKE CITY– Utah women's basketball bounced back with a 65-52 win over in-state foe Weber State Wednesday night.
The Utes move to 4-3 overall on the season and now hold a 59-6 all-time record over Weber State. Utah was led by freshman Avery Hjelmstad who posted 12 points and went 3-of-4 from the field, 2-of-3 from deep and 4-of-5 from the free throw line. Maty Wilke had an impressive stat line as well with her nine points, six assists and seven rebounds.
GAME SUMMARY
Utah started the game out strong by putting together an 11-2 run. Brooke Walker hit a three pointer with one second on the clock to end the first quarter to give Utah a 17-10 lead.
Avery Hjelmstad came into the fourth quarter hot, scoring 10 points in just 90 seconds with seven of those points unanswered. She became the first Ute to hit double figures and did it all in the fourth quarter ending the game with the game-high of 12 total points.
Utah ended the game with five consecutive made free throws to pull out a 65-52 victory over Weber State.
LEADERS
Every Ute that touched the floor scored for Utah. The Utes were led by Avery Hjelmstad's 12 points. Hjelmstad went 3-of-4 from the field including 2-of-3 from the three. She also went 4-of-5 from the line. Chyra Evans, Lani White, Brooke Walker and Maty Wilke each had nine points for Utah's offensive efforts.
Wilke tied her career high with six assists and season-high seven rebounds. Samantha Crispe also posted seven rebounds for Utah. Wilke also had three steals to help out Utah's defensive efforts.
COMPARISON
Utah shot 37.5% from the field while Weber State shot 31.1% from the field. Utah went 25.9% from three making 7-of-27 while Weber State went 33.3% shooting 10-of-30. The Utes shot 76.9% from the line going 10-of-13 while the Wildcats shot 100.0% from the line going 4-of-4.
Utah had 16 assists to Weber State's 13. The Wildcats had 43 rebounds to Utah's 40. Utah had 11 turnovers and forced Weber State into 18. Utah converted those turnovers into 15 points while Weber State was only able to capitalize with five points from turnovers. Utah boasted 30 points in the paint to Weber State's 16. The Utes' bench showed out with 17 points while the Wildcats' bench produced just six points.

"Great win. We let the lead evaporate there in the fourth quarter. It was good that we were able to gain our composure back and get some stops to finish out the game. Credit to Weber State they played hard the entire 40 minutes and did not waiver. They had the courage and ability to take shots when down and I wish them nothing but the best. I was really happy that we were able to respond when adversity hit in that fourth quarter."

On improving team turnovers . . .
"All of last weekend was a great learning experience for all of us. We aren't where we want to be right now but it was a great chance for us to see where we want to be. We play fast but we need to take care of the ball and be strong with the ball. Teams are going to pressure us so we need to be able to adjust to that. We did a really good job today of making those adjustments. We were aggressive, especially in the first half. We still have to work on putting full four quarters together but I felt like we were making the right reads and even if we did turn it over it didn't affect us on the next play. These next couple games are going to be really big for us on working on keeping our turnovers down."
On the importance of snapping the three game losing streak . . .
"We really didn't talk about going 0-3 in the last three games. It was a great test for us to play teams that are at the level where we want to be. We are a new team and a young team. There's a lot of things we have to fix but I think every game in the preseason is helping us get better. We don't want to hit our max potential right now, we want to hit that in March. Losing three in a row is hard but adversity like that is when you come together and that's when you grow. I feel like today was a great step in some aspects that we can take and keep moving forward."
On hitting 200 career assists . . .
"I love making the extra pass. I'm still finding that middle of being aggressive and taking shots and still looking for my teammates. I think it's a great thing to talk about because a lot of time people just talk about how many points you score but I love being on a team with other great players and I love helping those players make shots. I grew up playing unselfish basketball and I love that it's a focus on this team. I feel like assists are a stat that don't get talked about enough not just from me but from everyone on the team. It's always a collective effort to get points on the board and I love being able to shine the spotlight on that aspect of it."

Utah recorded an assist on 66% of all made field goals with 16 assists on 24 baskets.

Weber State found some momentum and answered Hjelmstad's hot streak with a 14-0 run and held Utah to a four minute scoring drought. Walker ended the drought thanks to a steal and a fastbreak layup.
