SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Utes women's basketball keeps the 2025-26 season rolling with a matchup against the Montana Lady Griz. This is the first time Utah has taken on Montana since 2007 and the first time in Missoula since 2004.

LAST TIME OUT
Utah women's basketball bounced back with a 65-52 win over in-state foe Weber State. Utah was led by freshman Avery Hjelmstad who posted 12 points and went 3-of-4 from the field, 2-of-3 from deep and 4-of-5 from the free throw line. All of Hjelmstad's points came in the fourth quarter with 10 of them happening within 90 seconds and seven went unanswered. Maty Wilke had an impressive stat line as well with her nine points, six assists and seven rebounds.
THE UTES
Utah returns four key contributors from the 2024-25 season including Maty Wilke,
Samantha Crispe,
Brooke Walker and
Reese Ross. This year the Utes welcome back
Lani White who played at Utah for her freshman and sophomore seasons. White spent her junior season at Virginia Tech but has returned to finish her collegiate career where she started it all, as a Ute. The Utes welcome one true transfer in
Kamryn Mafua and four freshmen in
LA Sneed,
Ella Todd,
Avery Hjelmstad and
Evelina Otto.
THE KEY IS WILKE
Maty Wilke is Utah's top returner. Wilke is shooting 40.5% from the field, 39.1% from three and 100% from the line while averaging 11.3 points per game. She's averaging 3.1 rebounds and has 17 assists so far this season. She leads the team in steals with nine on the season. Wilke has 958 total points in her collegiate career and is just 42 points away from the exclusive 1,000 point club. She's currently ranked No. 38 in the NCAA in made three pointers this season with 18.
HEAD COACH GAVIN PETERSEN
Petersen enters his second season and first full season as head coach. He was named the head coach of the Utah women's basketball team on Nov. 19, 2024 just four games into the 2024-25 season. He has a 22-11 record in his career. Petersen became the fastest coach in program history to get a Top-10 victory when he led the Utes to a 78-67 win over No. 3 NotreDame (11/30/24). He brings 23 seasons of college coaching experience to the role, he is in his 11th season overall with the Utes and spent the previous five years as associate head coach under Lynne Roberts.
Petersen has been a part of the staff that has led the Utes to seven postseason appearances—including four NCAA tournaments and a trip to the Sweet Sixteen—and five 20-win seasons, as well as regular appearances in the AP Top 25.
SCOUTING MONTANA
Montana has a 1-4 record so far this season and is coming off a 69-70 loss to BYU. Montana is led by head coach Nate Harris who is in his 1st season at the helm of the Grizzlies. Montana is averaging 64.8 points per game through their first five games while allowing opponents to score 77.2 points per game.
The Grizzlies are shooting 37.6% from the field, 32.1% from three, and 77.4% from the free-throw line across their first five games. On the glass, Montana is averaging 31.2 rebounds per game, compared to opponents' 44.8 boards per game. Montana has three players averaging double figures over their first five games: Mack Konig (16.4), Avery Waddington (13.4), and Jocelyn Land (10.0).
Mack Konig leads the team in scoring at 16.4 points per game, shooting 47.8% from the field, 41.7% from three, and 76.5% from the line, while adding 2.0 rebounds per game. Montana leads the all-time series 12-10. The last time the Utes and Grizzlies faced off was 3/14/07 in Salt Lake where the Utes won, 78-70. The last time they played in Missoula was 1/10/04 where the Grizzlies came out on top 61-58.
NEW AND NOTEWORTHY
• Against UConn (11/23), the Utes posted 14 assists on 14 made field goal for a 100% rate, the highest on the season.
• Maty Wilke posted a season-high 18 points against Syracuse (11/21).
• Maty Wilke tied her career high with six assists against Weber State (11/26). Wilke's six assists pushed her over the 200 assist milestone.
• Avery Hjelmstad had the game high 12 points against Weber State. All 12 points came in the fourth quarter, 10 of those points happened within 90 seconds and seven of them went unanswered.
• The Utes remain undefeated this season when knocking down 10 or more threes in a game.
2025-26 SEASON NEED TO KNOW
• Utah is coming off its fourth consecutive 20-win season and fourth NCAA Tournament appearances. Head Coach Gavin Petersen enters his second season at the helm of the Utes and 11th overall season at Utah.
• The Utes are returning seven from last year's squad including key contributors Maty Wilke, Reese Ross, Samantha Crispe and Brooke Walker.
• Utah welcomes back Lani White who spent the 2022-23 and 2023-24 season with Utah before spending the 2024-25 season at Virginia Tech.
• The Utes have five true newcomers on the roster this year in transfer Kamryn Mafua and freshmen Ella Todd, Evelina Otto, LA Sneed and Avery Hjelmstad
• At the helm for the Utes is Gavin Petersen who is in his second season as head coach and 11th overall season at Utah. He was named head coach Nov. 19, 2024, just four games into the 2025-26 season.

• Maty Wilke is currently No. 35 nationally in made three pointers with 18 and No. 43 in three pointers attempts (46).
