MALIBU, Calif. – A six-run fourth inning and 16 total hits on the day helped the Utah baseball team to an 11-2 win over Pepperdine on Saturday at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
Matt Flaharty and
Jake Long led the Utah bats with each contributing three hits. Flaharty was a home run short of the cycle, while
Santino Panaro homered and four different Utes had a double. Four members of the team also had two RBI apiece.
On the mound,
Payton Riske (1-0) earned the start and turned in a five-inning performance with two runs allowed. He struck out three Pepperdine batters against two walks and five hits.
Dylan Gazaway made his Utah debut, pitching the final four innings with just a pair of hits and a walk allowed. He fanned two.
It was a team effort all through the lineup as eight different players had a hit for Utah.
Tyler Quinn,
Cameron Gurney and
Kaden Carpenter drove in two runs apiece.
Pepperdine pushed a pair across in the first inning to take an early 2-1 lead. But the Utes made quick work to erase the deficit and take command of the game with 10 unanswered runs. Long's RBI single evened the score at 2-2 in the second inning.
Then in the top of the fourth, the floodgates opened as Utah scored six runs to take an 8-2 lead. The first eight batters of the inning reached for the Utes, kicked off by a
Derek Smith double. Three errors and two fielder's choices set the stage for back-to-back doubles by Gurney and Carpenter to close out the six-spot.
Panaro's solo homer came with one out in the seventh inning as he scored for the third time in the game. Then with two outs, Quinn laced a base hit up the middle to bring in Flaharty and
Austen Roellig.
Riske and Gazaway combined to retire Pepperdine leadoff hitters eight times.
