SAN DIEGO –
Matt Flaharty laced a single through the right side to score pinch runner
Zakye Hawkins and give the Utah baseball team a 4-3 walk-off win over Seattle on Saturday at Tony Gwynn Stadium, in the middle game of the Tony Gwynn Legacy series.
Despite trailing 3-1 after seven innings of play, Utah dug deep in the eighth to level the score at three, before the heroics in the ninth secured the win. The Utes are now 6-0 to start the year, matching the program's best six-game start to a season since 1970.
Flaharty drove in two runs, including the game-winner, as part of a 2-for-4 afternoon in which he also scored once.
Core Jackson was 2-for-4 as well, scoring the tying run in the eighth inning. Another multi-hit performance came in the eight-hole from
Santino Panaro, who was 2-for-2 with a walk and run scored.
Though the Utes had only one extra-base hit in the game, it came at a crucial time as
Derek Smith doubled to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning. Hawkins pinch ran for him and moved up to third base on a sac bunt from Panaro. After a walk to
Cal Kilgore, the lineup turned over to Flaharty who took a strike then delivered the game-winning single.
Cameron Nielson (1-0) earned the win, matching his longest collegiate outing with 2.1 innings of relief and striking out two Seattle batters.
Mateus Conaway also contributed out of the bullpen for 1.2 innings, coming on for in the sixth for starter
Payton Riske.
The Redhawks took an initial 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a solo homer, adding a two-run shot in the third inning for a 3-0 lead.
Utah got on the board in the bottom of that frame. Panaro reached with a one-out single, advancing to second base when an errant pickoff throw got away. After
Jack Kleveno was hit by a pitch, Flaharty singled to drive in Panaro with Utah's first run.
With Seattle in front 3-1, Nielson inherited a two-on, two-out situation in the top of the seventh. But he calmly induced a ground ball that Jackson fielded and flipped to Flaharty at second base to end the threat.
A two-out rally looked to present a chance for Utah in the seventh, but the Utes stranded two runners on base as the score remained 3-1 in Seattle's favor.
Nielson retired the Redhawks in order in the eighth, setting the stage for Utah to even the score.
Flaharty led off the inning and was initially called out for leaning into a pitch. But after a lengthy official review, he was awarded first base. Jackson then put a single through the right side to move Flaharty to third.
After Jackson stole second base, the Redhawks answered with a groundout and strikeout to put Utah on the verge of coming up empty in the inning. Carpenter worked the count full and put his single through the left side, with Jackson beating the throw home to tie the score at three.
The Utes also thwarted a Seattle threat in the ninth. After a hit batsman gave the Redhawks a runner on first base, he broke for second but Kilgore fired a strike to Jackson, who slapped on the tag. The runner was initially ruled safe, but the call was reversed on review for the second out.
Nielson then struck out his final batter looking and handed the keys back to the Utah bats to work the walk-off magic.
