The First Pitch: Things to Know
The Utah baseball team begins a four-game week on Tuesday as the Utes make the quick drive down to Orem, Utah, for a Tuesday night matchup at Utah Valley. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. MT inside UCCU Ballpark.
- Utah won its series opener 13-1 this past weekend at Baylor, helped by a quality start from right-hander Colter McAnelly plus hot bats that combined for eight extra-base hits and 16 hits altogether. It was a dominating performance for the club and included five RBIs for Tyler Quinn.
- In the middle game on Friday night, Merit Jones gave the Utes seven innings of three-run, walk-free ball with six strikeouts to keep Utah right in the ballgame with a chance to lock up the series. But Baylor used an eighth-inning homer to take a 4-3 victory and force a rubber game.
- Kaden Carpenter doubled in the rubber game but strong efforts from Baylor on the mound limited the visitors to two hits as the Utes fell. Cameron Gurney walked twice.
- Shortstop Core Jackson has been a mainstay of the Utah offense in his two seasons with the club. A .374 hitter since arriving in SLC, Jackson this season owns a .374 batting average, 14 doubles, eight home runs, 33 RBI and 42 runs scored—all team bests. In addition, infielder Austen Roellig (.350), outfielder Santino Panaro (.310) and infielder Tyler Quinn (.305) are each hitting above .300.
- Jackson was named to the Brooks Wallace Award Watch List last Thursday as one of the top 100 shortstops in the nation. Seven honorees on that initial list are members of Big 12 programs. Jackson's 14 doubles also place him second in the Big 12 Conference and are among Utah's team total of 89. The team tally is the second-highest in the league and ranks top-19 nationally.
- Both Jackson and right-handed pitcher Colter McAnelly were included on the midseason position rankings released by D1Baseball.com. Jackson was listed as the No. 13 shortstop in the country and McAnelly checked in as the No. 32-ranked starting pitcher.
- Roellig has enjoyed a nice turnaround since the second weekend of the season; he went 3-for-16 in Utah's first series at Pepperdine but quickly flipped the script and has built up his season average to .350—second on the team—with 12 doubles, a triple, one homer and 27 RBIs.
- A crucial Big 12 Conference home series awaits Utah this weekend at Smith's Ballpark. The Utes will host Kansas from Friday through Sunday, April 25-27.
This Week in Utah Baseball History
April 24, 1997 – With first place in the WAC on the line, Utah defeats rival BYU 8-6 on a 10th inning walk-off homer from Nate Forbush. As the ball curled down the right field line it was originally ruled foul; in a world before instant replay the umpires conferenced and reversed the call to a home run. It was Utah's 30th win of the season and the team went on to finish the season with a program-record 36 victories.
April 27, 1990 – Salt Lake City native Craig Sudbury no-hits New Mexico in a 2-1, seven-inning victory at Derks Field. The Lobos' only run came in the first inning after Sudbury hit the leadoff batter. The run was ultimately unearned.
