SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah Men's Golf team is set to return to the NCAA Regionals for the fourth time in the last five seasons, traveling to Bremerton, Wash., as the No. 3 seed.
"Every year when you start the season, the goal is to get to the national championship. In order to get there, you have to go through regionals," head coach
Garrett Clegg said. "It's a big box that needs to be checked and it's not easy to get there. This year we've been in a comfortable position, but it's great to be going back. Our program is one that has begun to take a hold on the national scene. We've started to make it a habit to be a part of the postseason. It's just a matter of the very best execution at the highest level under the most intense pressure. They've been able to do it all year and they've played great when we're in contention which is why we won four times. They're in a good space, mentally and emotionally."
The Utes have been a familiar face in the NCAA Regionals, making back-to-back appearances for the third time in program history. Utah's consistent postseason presence began back in the 2020-21 season when the team finished tied for seventh at the Cle Elum (Wash.) Regional. The Utes then took on the Norman Regional (Okla.) in the ensuing season, placing fifth and moving on to the NCAA Championships. After missing regionals in 2023, the Utes returned to the tournament last season at the Austin Regional (Texas). Last season was Utah's best showing in any regional, finishing in fourth and moving on to the NCAA Championships for the second time in program history.
Utah has put together a record-setting season that saw four team titles and five individual crowns, each the most in program history under a single season. Before this season, the program had totaled eight team tournament titles in its 34-year history. After
Sergio Jimenez (Palouse Collegiate),
Davis Johnson (The Tindall),
Gabriel Palacios (John Burns, The Goodwin) and
Brandon Robison (Arizona Thunderbird) all captured their first collegiate individual titles this season, the entire Utah lineup has earned an individual crown dating back to
Braxton Watts securing The Goodwin title last season. The Utes also reached their highest ranking throughout the season, reaching as high as No. 10 nationally before settling into No. 17 heading into the postseason.
The Utes are one of 14 teams in the Bremerton Regional, joined by Arizona State, Florida, South Carolina, USF, Colorado, Charlotte, Kansas, Colorado State, Kansas State, Elon, Coastal Carolina, Oral Roberts, and Seattle.
Six 54-hole regional tournaments will be conducted to determine the 30 qualifying teams and six individuals (not on those qualifying teams) who will compete in the finals. Thirteen teams and 10 individuals (not on those teams) will compete at each of three regionals while the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals (not on those teams). The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams will advance to the finals.
All 30 teams and six individuals will complete 54 holes of stroke play. Following 54 holes of competition, the top 15 teams along with the top nine individuals not on an advancing team will advance for one additional day of stroke play to determine the top eight teams for match-play competition and the 72-hole stroke-play individual champion. The top eight teams after 72 holes of play will be placed into a bracket thereafter.
The 2025 Men's Golf Championships will be located at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California.
