Spencer Fano, Caleb Lomu Tabbed to Outland Trophy Watchlist

Utah one of 13 programs with multiple players on list
SALT LAKE CITY — Utah offensive tackles Spencer Fano and Caleb Lomu have been named to the Outland Trophy Watchlist, the Football Writers Association of America announced on Tuesday.

Created in 1946, the Outland Trophy is celebrating its 80th year in 2025 and is given annually to the best interior lineman in college football. Fano and Lomu are two of 50 returning interior linemen to make the watchlist, with the pair also being selected to the Preseason All-Big 12 Team on July 7.

Fano, who started all 12 games in 2024 at right tackle, was a First Team All-Big 12 selection after another standout performance on the line. He ended that year with three All-America selections, including PFF First Team, Associated Press Second Team and Walter Camp Second Team. The Spanish Fork, Utah, native additionally earned First Team CFN Freshman All-America in 2023.

PFF graded the junior at 91.8 in run blocking during the 2024 regular season, more than three points better than any other offensive tackle in college football with his pass protection of 80.3 also being near the top – not allowing a single sack after the first week of the season. He has played in 25 career games at Utah with 24 starts (13 at RT, 11 at LT).

Lomu has played in 15 total games at Utah and started all 12 matchups in 2024 at left tackle. The redshirt sophomore was chosen as a 2024 Midseason Freshman All-American by The Athletic, while also earning CSC Academic All-District and Academic All-Big 12 Team honors. He was also named to the 2024 Polynesian College Football Player of the Year Watch List a year ago.

The FWAA will announce six or seven Outland Trophy semifinalists on Nov. 19 at a reception in Omaha, and those players will then be pared down to three finalists announced on Nov. 25. The recipient of the 2025 Outland Trophy will be announced on The Home Depot College Football Awards, live on ESPN on Dec. 12.
