SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah women's basketball season isn't over yet as the Utes have earned a bid to the Women's Basketball Invitational Tournament. Utah will be the No. 1 seed and will travel to take on Eastern Kentucky in the First Round in Richmond, Ky. on Thursday, March 19 at 4:30 p.m. (MT).
Should the Utes advance to subsequent rounds, Utah will host and bring basketball back to the Jon M. Huntsman Center this season.
This is the Utes fifth consecutive postseason berth after earning bids to the NCAA Tournament the previous four seasons.
"We're excited to get the opportunity to continue to play," said head coach Gavin Petersen. "At the end of the day we get to keep this group together and play basketball and we're going to try to keep that alive as long as we can."
This will be the Utes' 32nd overall appearance in the postseason and second under Petersen. The last time Utah went to a postseason other than the NCAA Tournament was in 2017-18 when Utah played in the Women's NIT and made it to the second round after defeating UNLV in the first round 78-68.
The WBIT is owned and funded by the NCAA. The creation of an annual 32-team postseason invitation tournament was announced in 2023 and started in 2024 making this the third annual showcase.
Eastern Kentucky currently has a 24-8 overall record and finished first in the ASUN. The Colonels were upset in the first round of the ASUN tournament. This will be the second meeting between Utah and EKU in school history. The previous matchup was in the 2023-24 season when the Utes and Colonels faced off in the Great Alaska Shootout and Utah came away with a 117-72 victory.
The game will be streamed on ESPN+ with Wes Chandler on the play-by-play and Kent Miller as analyst.
